Lions Safety Calls For Patience As Defense Adjusts Amid Absence of Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph

The Lions' defense entered 2026 with plenty of questions, and injuries have only made things harder. Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, Detroit's starting safeties, have both missed time, leaving the secondary without two major pieces.

Those absences have been felt through the opening three weeks. Detroit struggled badly against Buffalo in Week 2, but Sunday's matchup with the Jets offered a much-needed response. The defense still surrendered plenty of yards, yet it made the biggest play when the game was on the line.

With the Lions protecting a 31-24 lead, Chuck Clark came charging through on a safety blitz. He reached Geno Smith untouched, forced a fumble, and watched Jack Campbell recover it to seal the victory.

For Clark, that moment showed why Detroit cannot panic after a difficult opening stretch. The veteran safety believes the Lions still have plenty of time to establish their identity.

“It's a long season; you can't define us off a couple games. We just keep swinging and chipping away at it. We got an opportunity to keep proving ourselves right, and then everybody on the outside right next Sunday.”

That patience could prove important as Detroit waits for its injured starters. The Lions improved to 2-1, and Sunday's defensive finish gave the unit something positive to build on.

Dan Campbell Praises Lions Defense After Jets Victory

Campbell was especially pleased with the defense's response. He praised defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard for the late blitz and said his defense had to win the game for Detroit.

The Lions coach also praised the players for trusting their coaching and teammates. He called the defense's late stop exactly what Detroit needed after the struggles against Buffalo.

Now, Detroit has momentum and a chance to continue improving. Branch and Joseph remain important pieces, but Clark and the rest of the defense showed they can step up when required.
