The excitement of earning an NFL roster spot can disappear in an instant, and that is exactly what happened for Detroit Lions rookie wide receiver Kendrick Law, whose season has already ended with an injury.

Kendrick Law, the fifth-round draft pick out of Kentucky, suffered a season-ending knee injury during offseason activities. He tore his ACL during a non-contact drill and is now expected to miss the entire 2026 season.

“The kid was doing a good job,” Lions' head coach Dan Campbell said Thursday. “But … it’s part of it. It’s a harsh reality. He’ll get it out of the way early, have his whole career in front of him.”

While losing a young player who had impressed during offseason workouts is never ideal, the coach expressed that Law will remain at the beginning of his football journey. The franchise believes he can recover fully and bounce back with a chance to build a long NFL career.

Law enhanced his draft stock with an impressive performance at the NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, showcasing elite strength and speed.

In Kentucky, Law rose as the team's primary offensive weapon, recording 53 receptions for 540 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also averaged 10.2 yards per reception.

Before moving to Kentucky, he spent three seasons at Alabama. Detroit viewed Law as a depth receiver and special teams option behind experienced pass catchers such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Isaac TeSlaa.

Unfortunately, his rookie year will now be focused entirely on rehabilitation and recovery, as his debut waits. Dan Campbell also updated on Kerby Joseph's return.

Lions' Injury Concerns Grow as Kerby Joseph's Recovery Remains Uncertain

Along with Kendrick Law's injury announcement, head coach Dan Campbell admitted that the Lions don't have a clear timeline for safety Kerby Joseph's return from the knee injury that sidelined him last season.

“I honestly do not know,” Campbell said as per A to Z Sports. “We’ve done everything we can do, and he’s done everything he can do to this point, and we’re trying to be as smart as we can, and not push this until we absolutely have to, because once we’ve done that, then we’ll know one way or another.”

Detroit Lions' Beat writer, Mike Payton, informed that they asked the head coach or GM Brad Holmes about Joseph, and they always replied by saying, "he's getting better."

The standout safety has spent months rehabbing, and Campbell revealed that the team is being extremely cautious with his recovery and prefers not to push him until necessary.

With safety Brian Branch also returning from an Achilles injury, Detroit is ensuring the secondary remains competitive regardless of Joseph's availability. With Law's injury and Joseph's uncertain status, health may determine whether Detroit can make a deep playoff run in 2026.
