The Detroit Lions' linebacker delivered a big play during the mandatory minicamp. The first-year defender Jimmy Rolder delivered a standout interception during the Lions minicamp.
"Rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder started the parade of turnovers during a full-team period, dropping back into quarterback Teddy Bridgewater's passing lane on an attempted post to make a leaping, full-extension grab," reporter Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network reported on June 17.
Rolder intercepted a pass that quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had intended for his receiver.
"Had it been a game, the defender had enough green in front of him that he potentially houses the takeaway for six," Rogers added.
For a rookie trying to earn snaps, moments like these matter. The turnover was part of a larger defensive showcase during minicamp.
Detroit's defense forced multiple turnovers and consistently disrupted the passing game, creating a competitive atmosphere for both veterans and young players. Rolder's interception against the QB provoked the defense.
The former Michigan linebacker was drafted in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
He led the team with 73 total tackles, including seven for a loss, two sacks and one interception in 2025. He was named as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week in October and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.
However, Rolder has already given coaches and fans a glimpse of his potential.
"He Has a Lot of Ways To Grow," Says Defensive Coordinator Kelvin Sheppard
Jimmy Rolder has already created excitement, but defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard is keeping expectations realistic. While his interception in minicamp showed his instincts, the coaching staff understands that development takes time.
“He [Jimmy Rolder] still has a lot of ways to grow; this isn’t a guy we are looking to call the defense tomorrow,” defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard previously said, according to reporter Benjamin Raven. “But his trajectory and where we see things going for him is definitely on the upswing.”
The comments highlight Detroit's long-term vision for Rolder. Rather than rushing him into a leadership role, the Lions are focused on sharpening his understanding of the defensive scheme and helping him adjust to the NFL.
However, Sheppard's appreciation suggests that the rookie is progressing faster than expected. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!
