The Detroit Lions are searching for help after another defensive setback, with the team reportedly working out veteran safety Mike Edwards.
Meanwhile, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the workout on Monday as Detroit prepares for Week 3. Edwards brings seven years of NFL experience and 30 career starts. The two-time Super Bowl champion spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs and has also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills.
The workout does not mean Detroit has signed Edwards. Instead, the move shows the Lions are exploring veteran options after a difficult opening two weeks. Detroit has allowed 71 points through its first two games, creating a need for more depth.
Mike Edwards has also logged 615 career snaps in the slot, adding versatility to his safety experience. That could make him a useful option as the Lions assess their defensive backfield.
Detroit will now evaluate Edwards before deciding whether he fits their requirements. The move could provide experience as the Lions navigate through their mounting injury problems.
Lions deal with growing injury concerns on defense
Avonte Maddox suffered a foot injury in Detroit’s Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills and will reportedly miss the rest of the season after surgery.
Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are both still on the PUP list and cannot return before Week 5. Neither safety will practice this week, although Dan Campbell said Branch was closer to a comeback.
Jeremy Fowler also reported that Detroit was working out Jordan Fuller and Jalen Mills. Mills played three games for the Lions last season, while Fuller played six games for Atlanta.
