The Detroit Lions enter training camp with their star quarterback, Jared Goff. However, now at 31, the competition behind him is wide open with young quarterbacks battling for depth chart positions. That being said, one analyst has their doubts over their abilities.

As the training camp approaches, eyes are on Luke Altmyer's roster chances. The undrafted rookie has created optimism with his talent, but analysts believe he still faces an obstacle. The biggest point is proving he can consistently lead an offense during pre-season.

“Altmyer has already been praised for his smarts and overwhelming confidence,” Reisman wrote. “Personally, I was impressed with some respectable arm strength, as well. But before we start anointing him a spot on the 53-man roster, Altmyer will have to show he can command an NFL offense during what is likely going to be a lengthy preseason stint.”

Reisman's statement on Pride of Detroit is a warning that the Lions' backup QB is not ready. Strong physical abilities and confidence can lead to opportunities, but mastering the offense, making quick reads, and limiting mistakes will determine if Altmyer earns a roster spot.

Detroit's coaching staff is expected to give him extended preseason chances to prove that he belongs here. The Lions QB room already has established depth, making competition more fierce.

In his final college year at Illinois, the young quarterback had 3,000 yards for 22 passing touchdowns.

Altmyer joined the Lions after a good collegiate career at Ole Miss and Illinois. He developed into a reliable starter known for his leadership skills and decision-making.

While analysts have asked for patience regarding Altmyer's roster chances, Lions HC Dan Campbell is impressed by what he has observed during offseason workouts.

Dan Campbell's statement gives Lions' rookie QB an early boost ahead of training camp

The Detroit Lions' head coach, Dan Campbell, offered feedback on Luke Altmyer's ability to quickly absorb Detroit's offensive system.

“He doesn’t lack confidence, that’s for sure,” Campbell told reporters on June 4. “I mean, what we thought he would be at this point, I would say, has kind of held. What I mean by that is, man, he’s able to kind of retain the information we have given him so far."

The Lions' coach's comments show why the franchise was eager to bring Altmyer in as an UDFA after the 2026 NFL Draft.

Although he praised the rookie's confidence and ability to adapt quickly, the QB still faces a hurdle in a crowded QB room.

His performance during training camp and the preseason will determine if he can make it to Detroit's final 53-man roster.
