The Detroit Lions might have found stability at the quarterback position with Jared Goff by their side, but recent conversations suggest that the franchise can start preparing for the future after the veteran.

The Lions are still in the NFC, so the analyst Justin Melo thinks the front office can use a future draft pick on a developmental passer who can learn behind Goff. That possibility has the Lions linked to former Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby.

“Goff is under contract through 2028, but acquiring a young backup wouldn’t be a bad idea. Right now, Goff is supported by 33-year-old Teddy Bridgewater and undrafted rookie quarterback Luke Altmyer,” wrote Justin Melo of Sports Illustrated. “Sorsby would make sense.”

Goff is not going anywhere as Detroit's starter for now, but the Lions may already be thinking ahead. Finding a developmental quarterback before it becomes a pressing need is smart roster management, and that is part of why Melo sees Sorsby as a logical fit for the franchise.

In Goff's case, his fourth year with the Lions brought a strong playoff run, but things started slipping in the fifth. Melo suggested Detroit's late-season struggles highlighted the importance of preparing for the future at quarterback.

With Goff helping turn Detroit into a contender, the Lions have the flexibility to think about the future without being forced into an immediate quarterback search. They won the NFC North in the 2023 season and even the next season reached the playoffs, but were defeated in the divisional round.

Meanwhile, Sorsby has drawn attention from draft evaluators because of his talent and developmental upside. He led the Cincinnati Bearcats to an undefeated streak over his five starts in 2025.

His profile is the perfect match for growing behind an experienced veteran. Investing in a young quarterback would allow Detroit to begin planning for life after Goff while still competing with him as the starter.

But Lions have to step forward with caution, considering Sorsby.

According to NFL insider J.L. Canfora, the Lions are a perennial contender, and they consistently pick late in the first round, which puts elite quarterbacks out of reach.

That is what makes players like Sorsby worth paying attention to. And Sorsby has already built a resume that backs up the interest.

He threw 60 career touchdowns against just 18 interceptions. Last season, he alone recorded 27 touchdown passes and only five picks, showing both production and efficiency.

With Jared Goff established as the starter, Detroit can develop a young QB silently. Selecting Sorsby could be a low-risk investment with long-term upside.
