After spending two seasons learning behind one of the NFL's elite offensive lines, Detroit Lions offensive tackle Giovanni Manu has come to a defining point in his career. The franchise invested in him as a long-term project, but their patience seems to be wearing thin.

As the offensive tackle enters training camp under increasing pressure, NFL analyst Rainer Sabin has pointed to some comments by GM Brad Holmes that raise doubts about the former fourth- round pick's abilities.

“It would be irresponsible for us to just go into it thinking that, ‘Well, we drafted a developmental player a couple of years ago. He’s going to be the guy,” Holmes said in his 2025 end-of-year conference. "I’m not going to sit here and say that we feel convinced that he’s ready to be a major contributor."

In his Free Detroit Press report, Sabin discussed Detroit's approach to building its roster. The Lions understand that Manu would need patience after selecting him out of the University of British Columbia. Holmes made it clear that just draft status won't earn him a role.

The franchise lets the competition decide the outcome instead of depending on long-term potential. Manu's development, unfortunately, was delayed by limited playing time and injuries.

After spending his rookie season learning behind veterans, he got his knee injured in his first career start.

Before his injury, he allowed only two pressures on 28 pass-blocking snaps. However, his knee injury led to him being put on injured reserve early in the season, which limited his opportunity to gain enough experience.

With the offensive line being the team's greatest strength, they cannot afford uncertainty.

Lions will make each roster battle more competitive. As the training camp approaches, Manu's future will depend on how much progress he has made over the offseason.

Manu himself has also been candid about the setbacks that tested his confidence in the past.

OT Giovanni Manu is not hiding away from the challenges that have slowed his growth in Detroit. He is embracing them as motivation heading into the 2026 season.

"I’m not going to sugarcoat anything. I was frustrated,” Manu said, per Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. “I definitely had to sit in my living room for a little bit and just weigh it out, you know? What’s this [mean for] me in the future, how am I going to handle it?”

He had high expectations after entering the league, but injuries made his second NFL season more difficult. The 24-year-old admitted the experience forced him to confront tough questions about his future.

But rather than being disappointed, he is using those emotions for offseason preparation, hoping to earn a larger role in Detroit's offense.
