The Detroit Lions are in full swing with their OTAs after they revamped their offensive line this offseason. At the center of their OL is newly acquired Cade Mays from the Carolina Panthers. 

Speaking to the media after OTAs, Mays shared his thoughts on how the team is preparing for the season ahead. The offensive lineman specifically discussed the process of building chemistry with Goff.

“But I feel like we’ve done a great job this week,” Mays said. “Jared’s been awesome with helping me with the questions I have and the looks. So, it’s been great,” Mays added. 

Detroit is replacing longtime center Frank Ragnow and expects Mays to take over the role.

Later, reporters asked Mays about the relationship with the quarterback. Mays said communication has been a big part of the process as he gets comfortable in the new offense.

“Yeah, just communicating,” Mays said. “I mean, it’s a new offense for me. He’s been in a long time. So, just leaning on him, asking him questions, what he sees, what he’s looking for, and seeing it through his lens,” Mays added.

In his NFL career, Goff has recorded 39,622 passing yards, 256 passing touchdowns, and 102 interceptions over 151 games across 10 regular seasons.

On the other hand, Mays, who is in the early phase of his career, has appeared in 52 regular-season games and made 27 starts in the first four NFL seasons. 

Goff also recently said, per Heavy.com, building chemistry with Mays is a priority as the two continue working together during the offseason.

“We have not had much time yet, but we will [build a rapport],” Goff said. “He is such an easy guy to get along with.”

Dan Campbell Calls Mays a ‘Good Fit’ for Detroit

Head coach Dan Campbell also offered an early endorsement of Mays during OTAs, according to Heavy.com.

Asked about Mays, Campbell said the offensive lineman has made a strong early impression. While Mays is still learning the details of the offense, the Lions coach likes what he has seen from him physically.

“It’s early, but Cade Mays, man, he’s a good-looking dude,” Campbell said. “He’s a big man, he’s built right, moves pretty well. And now it’s just getting up to speed with our terminology, the MIKE points, all that. But I like Cade, man, he’s a good fit for us.”

Mays is entering his fifth NFL season. The Panthers selected him in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He started 20 games at center over the past two seasons after initially spending time at guard.

With positive feedback from both Campbell and Goff, it will be interesting to see how quickly Mays settles into his new role.
