Lions might turn to Patrick Mahomes’ teammate to fix major roster gap

The Detroit Lions suddenly have a major issue that needs to be solved after the release of former first-round pick Terrion Arnold. Riley Moss is considered the best overall option, but now a Kansas City Chiefs player is seen as a suitable fit.

A blockbuster trade for an All-Pro cornerback appears unlikely due to cap restrictions. Meanwhile, general manager Brad Holmes could still look to add an experienced starter. Several names have been mentioned, but one has stood out, and it is Patrick Mahomes' teammate, cornerback Kristian Fulton.

Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports came up with his list of five cornerbacks for the Lions, and Fulton is one of them.

The 27-year-old played for both the Tennessee Titans and the Los Angeles Chargers before his move to the Chiefs in 2025. However, injuries were a problem, and he was only able to start two games for them.

In his last full season in 2024, he allowed a 65.2 reception percentage, and in the eight games he played last season, he had posted a 50 reception percentage and recorded four pass breakups before the injury.

"The Lions could probably get Fulton for a sixth-round pick," wrote Payton. "He could come in, compete for the starting job, and likely win it. At 27, he has multiple years of productive football ahead of him. That’s the kind of low-cost, high-floor move Detroit should be making right now."

The Lions are also expected to look at other possible targets, such as former Lions and current Atlanta Falcons cornerback Mike Hughes, the San Francisco 49ers’ Renardo Green, New York Giants’ cornerbacks Deonte Banks and Paulson Adebo, according to Payton.

It will be difficult for the Lions to add a star in the cornerback position. However, a move for Fulton may be the best option due to the affordability, experience, and possible upside.

According to Spotrac, Fulton has agreed to a two-year $20 million contract, including $15 million fully guaranteed, in last year March.

Amidst Fulton's buzz, a current Lions player is being named as the person to replace Arnold as the starter on the team.

Lions might already have the player to replace Arnold

After cutting their former first-round pick, questions have arisen over who will start for him this season. However, they might already have the answer within the team.

Pride of Detroit analyst Jeremy Reisman sees Rock Ya-Sin assuming the starting role for the outside cornerback position. After joining the Lions in 2025, he played in all 17 regular-season games and started six games.

“Rock came in and did an excellent job. But that’s who he is,” Lions defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend said earlier this month. “He’s a pro. He’s diligent, he works the right way. I wouldn’t expect anything less."

Ya-Sin tallied 47 combined tackles, nine pass breakups, and had two quarterback hits last season. According to Pro Football Focus, Ya-Sin ranks 57th out of 114 cornerbacks in 2025. This has prompted the Lions to re-sign Ya-Sin to a one-year deal worth $3.2 million in March.

Do you think Ya-Sin is a good option to replace Arnold, or should they look to get Fulton to start? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
