Lions HC Makes Feelings Clear on Jahmyr Gibbs Entering 2026

The Detroit Lions are entering a new chapter in their backfield, and head coach Dan Campbell has already made it clear who will be at the center of it.
During an appearance at the OTA media session, Campbell revealed that running back Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to take on a much larger role in Detroit's offense after the departure of RB David Montgomery, according to Click On Detroit.
“Gibbs is going to be our bell cow now,” Campbell told the reporters. “We’re going to hang our hat on him quite a bit," Campbell added.
The Lions drafted the running back Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, making him the 12th overall pick.

While some view him primarily as a speed back who thrives in space, Campbell refuted that perception and highlighted the complete skill set that makes Gibbs capable of handling a heavier workload.
“He can run every scheme that anybody’s ever run. He’s not just an outside runner. He’s not just a space runner. He can create his own space in the middle,” Campbell added.
Gibbs' production during his first three NFL seasons has been increasing over the years. Last season, he played in 17 games, recording 243 rushing attempts with a success rate of 46.5% for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Campbell also emphasized that Gibbs' responsibilities will extend beyond the running game.
“We expect him to have a big year for us,” Campbell said. “We’re going to put a lot on his plate in the run and pass game.”
With ongoing OTAs, the Lions are focused on their minicamps as they hope to prepare Gibbs for the new additions.
Lions Confident Gibbs Can Handle Lead Back Duties
Detroit’s confidence in Gibbs is evident now after the departure of Montgomery to the Houston Texans. That trade ended their duo partnership, which surprised many fans and teams.
After Montgomery’s trade, the move raised questions about who would replace his production. However, Campbell suggests that the coaching staff sees Gibbs as producing that kind of production.
With more expectations, all eyes will be on Gibbs.
"Growing up, I've always been the person that (wants) everyone's carries," Gibbs said, as per Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News. "I'm not looking at it any different than any other year."
The Lions and head coach expect contributions from Pacheco, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, and tight end Sam LaPorta. But Gibbs is expected to lead the offense for the Lions.
With Montgomery no longer in the picture and Campbell publicly announcing him as the team's lead back, Gibbs will handle the running back position this season.
