Free agency continues to reshape the Detroit Lions roster as the franchise released the $7M defensive end, Josh Paschal, due to consistent injury concerns.

Due to his injury and back surgery, he remained absent in the 2025 season. 

The Lions drafted Josh Paschal in 2022, a second-round pick from the NCAA Kentucky Wildcats. In his career, Josh played three seasons, appearing in 36 games, recording 42 tackles and 5 sacks. Josh also recorded five sacks and successfully defended one pass. 

According to Spotrac, he signed a 4-year contract worth of $7.7 million, with an average salary of $1.9 million, and a $2.8 million signing bonus.

However, after not getting the expected results, Paschal was released as an unrestricted free agent in 2025.

Josh Paschal’s injury reduced an important rotational depth for the Detroit Lions defensive line, forcing the team to rely more heavily on other edge defenders throughout the season. 

Paschal, standing 6 ft 3 in., weighing 284 pounds, was known for his build. He was primarily used as a physical run defender who could help set the edge and provide flexibility in defensive packages. ​

With Josh absent, the Lions had fewer options to rotate along the front, which increased the workload on key pass rushers like Aidan Hutchinson. It also limited the defense’s ability to keep its defensive line fresh during long stretches of the season.

Detroit Lions Look for Defensive Line Alternatives after releasing Josh Paschal

The Detroit Lions may first look to internal options like Tyler Lacy to help fill the defensive line rotation following Josh Paschal's release.

In 2025, he joined the Lions as a rotational defensive tackle. Lacy, a former fourth-round selection, has played in 38 NFL games and obtained 58 total tackles, one sack, and one pass deflection. 

If Detroit continues to rely on internal development along the defensive front, he is an obvious choice to take on more snaps because his primary role has been to provide interior depth and run support.

But the Lions might also look into adding players from outside the team. According to analysts, Detroit might look to veteran free agency or the upcoming draft for the defensive line. 

Early projections have connected Detroit to prospects like Keldric Faulk and T.J. Parker, while seasoned free agents like Chase Young or Emmanuel Ogbah could offer instant depth.
