Lions $5M Signing Might Just Have Fixed the Hole Left By Taylor Decker

Losing veteran offensive tackle Taylor Decker was a big blow to the Lions this offseason. But the team thankfully found a promising replacement for him in free agency.
Larry Borom will have to be the solution the Lions have been looking for at right tackle. He signed a 1-year, $5 million deal with the Lions, of which $4.9 million is guaranteed.
This is homecoming for Borom, who is from the Motor City. This is a much-needed boost for Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell for that offensive line, especially because of the experience he brings.
The offensive lineman has appeared in 63 games and started in 38 of those. Borom played the most snaps in his career last season at Miami with 664, all of which came from right tackle (RT).
If the Lions start him at this position, Detroit's other star OT, Penei Sewell, will move to left tackle. He has lined up at that position during his collegiate career at Oregon, where he also won the Outland Trophy.
This is also good for Jared Goff, the star quarterback of the Lions, who was sacked a career-high 38 times last season. That's not a statistic that he'd want to repeat in his career.
Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes could use their first-round pick on an offensive lineman, with the top targets being Clemson’s Blake Miller, Utah’s Caleb Lomu, and Alabama’s Kadyn Proctor. But having Borom gives them a ready option at hand.
This gives Campbell and Holmes much-needed flexibility in their plans for the offensive line. Knowing that they have a player whom they can rely on for the season is great for the franchise.
What did the general manager say about Larry Borom?
Brad Holmes believes that Larry Borom is capable of starting NFL games for the Detroit Lions at right tackle.
“He’s started a lot of games, yeah,” Holmes said. The Detroit, Michigan, native is set to enter his sixth NFL season with the Lions.
Holmes further added, “Seeing what he did at Miami, especially at right tackle, and then when you start looking at the film, man, this is probably about the most consistent ball that I’ve seen him play.”
Holmes also added to the flexibility aspect of signing a player like Larry Borom, “I think that’s the beauty of having a player like him, is that you always have that flexibility of him playing left tackle.”
“He’s done it before. It’s not anything foreign to him. Even as we’re going through free agency, we weren’t really pigeonholed, like we gotta get the left tackle. We’re like, what’s the best tackle for us? And we’ll kind of adjust as needed.”
