While some NFL pundits view the signing of former Illinois quarterback as a major post-draft steal, ‌many fans remain unsold on relying on a rookie as the primary insurance policy behind franchise starter Jared Goff.

In the latest episode on the Sports Talk Detroit YouTube channel, the host, Craig, raised concerns over the backup options around the Lions' star quarterback, Jared Goff, and he believes Luke Altmyer can be an option for the Lions.

“Over the last three years, he has had um almost 1,200 drop-backs when it comes to throwing the football,” Craig recalled his career stats. “He has thrown in his college career, all right, over a thousand attempts.” 

While making an argument on the Detroit Lions QB depth, Craig went through Altmyer’s collegiate career. 

Per Sports Reference, the Illinois product has spent five seasons in the NCAA. Where he played two seasons for the Ole Miss Rebels and three for the Illinois Fighting Illini.

During his time in the NCAA, Altmyer appeared in 44 games where he threw for 7,924 yards and scored 60 TDs.

Altmyer’s stats back up Craig's claim. Craig believes QB2 Teddy Bridgewater does not possess the elite arm strength that he used to have.

He emphasized that Altmyer played in a pro-style offense at Illinois, which he views as a positive indicator for NFL readiness.

But fans are in disbelief over Craig’s opinion on Altmyer as the QB2 option for Goff. 

Fans Remain Skeptical About Luke Altmyer’s Role

Craig’s opinion on Luke Altmyer quickly turned into a debate for fans, as they do not approve of him as the QB2 for Jared Goff.

Many fans pushed back on the idea that Altmyer could challenge veteran Teddy Bridgewater for the backup role.

One fan mocked the possibility altogether, writing, “if a UDFA beats out Teddy Bridgewater, I'm just gonna grab some w****** & popcorn while watching the interwebs explode.” The comment reflected the belief that a rookie undrafted quarterback overtaking an established veteran would create chaos among the fanbase.

Still, most reactions favored the current pecking order. “No QB controversy in Detroit!! Nice clickbait title bet u got the attention your obviously desperate for with a title like that! It's simple Goff obviously the starter then teddy then the rookie what is so controversial about it!?” one fan wrote while dismissing any debate.

Others preferred looking outside the roster entirely. “Give up a 2nd for Sorsby, sit him for 2 to 3 years. He needs a good coach & QB to learn from. Highly insane take (I know),” another fan suggested.

The fans made it clear that they are not buying the Altmyer hype yet believe in Bridgewater as the clear backup behind Goff.
