A tragic accident has left the Motown team fans in shock after the tragic passing of former Lions star Chris Payton. The news has left fans and former teammates mourning his sudden demise. 

According to News 4 Jacksonville, the former cornerback Chris Payton-Jones was involved in an alleged car accident on Saturday night, April 11, in Florida. 

His passing quickly spread across social media, as tributes and condolences poured in from across the football community.

As per the sources, on Saturday night, Payton-Jones, driving a sedan, was involved in a head-on smash with a pickup truck in Alachua County, Florida. 

The accident was reported with four victims, among whom he is the only reported fatality, the other three, driving in the pickup truck, sustained minor injuries. They are being treated as we speak. 

Payton-Jones started his football career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2014. His start in the NFL was bumpy as he went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft.

He had short stints with the Arizona Cardinals, the Detroit Lions, the Minnesota Vikings, and finally the Tennessee Titans. 

For his last stint with the Titans, he earned a PFF grade of 67.3 in 83 snaps. He also recorded seven solo tackles that year.

After he retired from the NFL, he joined the spring leagues in 2023. Played in XFL for the Seattle Sea Dragons and later joined the UFL in 2024, playing for the St. Louis Battlehawks. 

He had recently transitioned into coaching and content creation in his hometown of Jacksonville, actively contributing to the football community. The news has been met with emotional responses and tributes from fans all over.

Chris Payton Remembered as Fans Share Their Reactions

Once the news was confirmed by his family, the reactions came in from every corner: coaches, teammates, and fans.

For those who knew him early, the memories go back to the grind. Adam Geis, his coach at Sandalwood High School, was the first one among many. 

“He was one of my all-time favorites! The kid never missed a workout…Everyone loved him,” the comment read.

The same sentiment was carried by Pat Clark, Associate Head Coach at Central State University, who summed up what defined him.

“Chris was the hardest working human being I've ever been around, a great player but even better person…and the game paid him back for it,” he said.

At the same time, fans reacted in real time, and their words didn’t hold back. 

One fan wrote, “...I loved his cinematic UFL vlogs.”

The sentiment captured how connected people felt to his journey beyond the field. 

“Prayers for his family!” another comment said.

The words were simple but carried a lot of weight.  For many, the shock was still settling in

“One of the many fun players to play in the UFL….RIP CPJ,” one fan shared.

As per sources, Payton-Jones' family and the Sandalwood High School community are planning a memorial service to celebrate his life and legacy.
