The Lions and Dan Campbell already have plenty to address after a difficult start to the season. Now, Detroit has received another worrying update with two more players ruled out against the New York Jets.
Safety Thomas Harper and offensive lineman Ben Bartch are both officially OUT. Their absences add to growing concerns on both sides of the ball, especially for a team already dealing with several important injuries.
Detroit has already played without Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph in the secondary. Blake Miller also missed time before recently returning, giving the Lions another boost along the offensive line.
Now, Harper and Bartch join the list of unavailable players. Fortunately, the exact reasons behind their absences have not been confirmed, meaning there is no indication yet that either player has suffered another significant injury.
Still, the timing will concern Lions fans. Detroit needs as many healthy contributors as possible, particularly while Dan Campbell's team tries to find consistency after its uneven opening weeks.
The Lions cannot afford to lose more depth as the season progresses. For now, they will have to hope Harper and Bartch's absences are temporary and unrelated to another major injury setback.
Dan Campbell Provides Update on Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph
Campbell previously provided some encouraging news regarding his injured safeties. He said Branch had a chance to return before Joseph, although neither player was expected back that week.
The Lions coach also explained that Joseph's rehabilitation was taking longer because the team wanted to make sure his knee became as strong as possible. Detroit has taken a cautious approach rather than rushing him back.
That patience could prove important with the secondary already stretched. Now, with Harper also unavailable, the Lions will hope their injury situation does not become even more difficult
