Lions Face Crucial Jared Goff Decision Amidst $9M Problem

The Detroit Lions have had some good seasons in the past few years, and Jared Goff has been a key part of them. However, the Lions face a major financial hurdle regarding Goff, heading into 2026.
Over the Cap has projected the Lions to be more than $9M over the 2026 salary cap. And their primary quarterback has a cap hit of $69,600,000 walking into the 2026 season.
That is the highest individual salary cap hits in the NFL for the 2026 season. The Lions must restructure his contract to free some space to hire free agents and rookies in the upcoming season. Pride of Detroit has even come up with a plan to free $40 million.
One proposal suggests the Lions could shift $50 million of Goff’s pay into a signing bonus via a standard restructure. While the NFL does allow teams to convert whatever amount of the player's salary they want into a signing bonus, there's a catch: The salary shouldn't drop below the veteran minimum.

So the base salary for Goff can't go below $1.3 million. So the new plan would mean that Goff's base salary would be $5 million. A $14.6 million proration of his previous signing bonus, and also a $10 million new signing bonus.
That would bring his total 2026 cap hit down to approximately $29.6 million. But that $40 million won't vanish.
It would then be pushed into future years, adding $10 million to both the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The remaining $20 million would accelerate as dead cap in 2029 when the contract hits the void.
The Lions have used this strategy before, converting $20M of Goff's 2021 salary into a signing bonus, creating roughly $15M in 2021 cap space. Coming back to 2026, it wouldn't be the QB only who would take a hit as the NFL franchise looks to make more cap space.
Lions Can Eye These Three Players After Jared Goff To Create More Cap Space
The Lions must release C Graham Glasgow. He allowed one sack and 19 total pressures while committing two penalties in 2025 and was even benched. According to Over the Cap, the Detroit Lions would save $7 million with a post–June 1 release.
That is the second-most the team can gain by cutting a single player. Most would come from cutting RT Taylor Decker, i.e., $17 million. He has been with the team for 10 years, and while it can be bittersweet, they have to make tough decisions.
The Lions can also trade or release RB David Montgomery. Cutting him would save $6 million in cap space with a post-June 1 designation. Trading him for draft capital would be the ideal outcome, especially with the team holding just 8 picks in the Draft, 5 of them coming on Day Three.
