The path that has brought Detroit Lions’ defensive end Ahmed Hassanein to the NFL has been nothing short of extraordinary. Now, Hassanein is pursuing a goal to become a part of an NFL roster ahead of the 2026 season. If he earns a place on Detroit’s 53-man roster, it would help fulfil a dream that has remained out of reach for years.

On this Father’s Day weekend, Ahmed is busy trying to get his father to come and watch him play live for the first time ever. However, sincehis father, 71-year-old Hassanein Mahdy Hassanein, has difficulties procuring a U.S. visa , this could happen in Germany, where the Lions will be facing the New England Patriots. Now, they have hired an immigration lawyer to help.

“It would mean a lot for me,” the elder Hassanein said over the phone from his home in Egypt. “Once I do this, I will start to cry.”

The younger Hassanein has also talked about how the most important thing for him is to get his father to watch him play.

“Because there’s nothing he wants more than just to watch me play football,” said Ahmed. “He has never seen me play in person. And I just pray one day that he’ll get that chance.”

 Ahmed grew up in Egypt and learned football as a teenager in California before eventually reaching Detroit. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 draft. However, it will be extra challenging to get a spot this year.

The stake of his journey carries immense historical weight, as his selection at No. 196 overall officially made him the first player of Egyptian heritage ever taken in the history of the NFL Draft

Moreover, Ahmed is also coming back from a torn pectoral muscle injury and was released with an injury settlement by the Lions last season. However, he decided to return despite an offer from the Tennessee Titans last November.

Still, things are looking up for Ahmed after a compliment from one of the Lions’ coaches.

Ahmed “a pleasant surprise” according to Lions coach

Over the last few months, Ahmed has spent time transitioning from his position to play the “big en” role in the Lions’ defensive system. He has worked with the private strength coach of All-Pro teammate Aidan Hutchinson, David Lawrence, to be in shape for the role. This work ethic and determination have been praised by the Lions’ defensive line coach, Kacy Rodgers.

“He’s been a pleasant surprise this spring,” said Rodgers. “He just wants to play: ‘Coach, just put me wherever.’ He just wants to do whatever is asked of him and go from there.”

Ahmed had a decent collegiate career where he played for the Boise State Broncos from 2021 to 2024. He appeared in 48 games and had a combined 119 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, and 24 sacks. His sack record ranks fourth overall in the Boise State program’s history.

Hassanein will be hoping to be a part of the roster and finally achieve his dream of getting his father to watch him play in the NFL live.
