While interacting with Tim Twentyman on the “Twentyman in the Huddle” podcast, Derrick Moore talked about the meritorious advantage that he received after getting drafted by the Detroit Lions from the Michigan Wolverines over the other Lions rookies.

"I mean, I feel like it's a big advantage, a big time advantage. Uh, because like we said, I don't really have to go nowhere,” Moore said. “I'm familiar with the area. You know, I got ties. I feel like Detroit got ties, you know, to Michigan.”

Per the Detroit Lions, the other six rookies are Blake Miller, Jimmy Rolder, Keith Abney II, Kendrick Law, Skyler Gill-Howard, and Tyre West.

Moore’s new team is just 40 mins away from Ann Arbor, the primary training facility and home base for the Michigan Wolverines, in‌ Detroit.

Upon being asked by Twentyman about the advantages he received upon his draft, Moore responded that he joined a familiar environment that he had at the Wolverines.

The major advantage was financial, he did not have to go to a new distant place, no new neighborhood, and he didn’t need to form new connections, which the majority of the rookies have to go through.

“Um, so that relationship plays hand in hand. Um, also, you know, being a part of this defense, I feel like the same type of defense that we had at Michigan,” Moore said. “So, I feel like everything just plays in favor.”

Back in his collegiate times, Moore used to play as an edge rusher, with all the chatter around Moore‌ is expected to play opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Which will again provide him with a similar working opportunity.

“All I got to do is just go out there, compete, and just learn and pretty much just stay humble and keep my head down and just work," Moore added.

This being the case, Moore now has to focus on his development as an option for Aidan Hutchinson.

Derrick Moore Talks About His Goals Ahead of the 2026 NFL Season

Being considered ‌a viable option as a complement to Aidan Hutchinson, Derrick Moore has set milestones for his upcoming rookie NFL season.

He is self-aware that he has to work on the gridiron to secure a position on the roster.

“Going into it, I don’t know how high my ceiling is gonna be until the pads are on and we’re out there on the field," Moore explained. "Going forward, I just want to stay the process, stay the course.”

Derrick Moore decided to dedicate his first rookie season to learning from the veteran talent present in the locker room. He will be learning from DJ Wonnum and Hutchinson himself.

“Take in all the knowledge that I can and pretty much be a sponge my first year and just learn from everything,” Moore added.

Aspiring to be ‌added to the roster opposite ‌the Lions' star Aidan Hutchinson, Moore has shown a strong desire to learn the nuances of football and implement the knowledge gained to improve his gameplay to the standards of the Detroit Lions.

With a learning mindset, edge rusher Derrick Moore is all set to begin his professional NFL career with the Detroit Lions.
