The Detroit Lions are making calculated moves ahead of the draft. A recent update tied to roughly $5.4M in cap space signals how the Lions are managing flexibility before adding new talent.

According to Spotrac and OverTheCap, the Lions revealed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s free agency contract ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Part of that picture includes the return of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, a move that adds veteran depth behind QB Jared Goff while still keeping the cap structure under control. 

QB2 Teddy Bridgewater is primarily known in the Detroit Lions as a veteran, high-IQ backup quarterback who provided steady leadership and mentorship to younger players.

He is an essential support to starter Jared Goff during the 2023 season and a 2024 playoff run.

Throughout his career, he started 65 games out of 85 games played. He threw for 15,182 yards and scored 75 touchdowns, according to Pro Football Reference. 

Bridgewater has received a pretty straightforward deal in his NFL return. However, he has been in and out of his retirement in the past three years.

As mentioned on Sportrac, Bridgewater has signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Detroit Lions. 

His contract includes a $187,500 signing bonus and $158,700 guaranteed money. 

In 2026, Bridgewater will earn a base salary of $1.4 million and a signing bonus of $187,500, while carrying a cap hit of $1.8 million and a dead cap value of $1.58 million. He expected to get released as a free agent in 2027. 

He should be fully expected to be the team’s backup quarterback, unless something unexpected happens during draft week.

He made an appearance in the 2024 playoffs and played the 2025 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a controversial suspension from his high school coaching role. 

Now entering his 12th season, he reprises his role as the primary backup to Jared Goff. 

His presence is viewed as a strategic insurance policy for a Lions team looking to reclaim its NFC North dominance.
