After the O-Line, the Detroit Lions are now building depth on defense, making sure their secondary is ready ahead of the 2026 season.

This time it is a safety, re-signed, for maintaining stability and experience in the unit.

On Monday, the Motown team announced the re-signing of safety Avonte Maddox, bolstering the secondary depth. 

Avonte Maddox was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round (125th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. 

Known for his versatility, aggressive playing style, and high-level performance as a nickel cornerback, he holds a Pro Football Focus grade of 79.1 in 342 snaps played. 

The Motown native joined the Detroit Lions in 2025 and played 14 games, recording 32 tackles. 

Although Maddox’s return does raise some concerns, as recently, Chuck Clark was also signed from the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Kerby Joseph already around with his injured knee, Maddox has to compete with the likes of Thomas Harper, Christian Izien, Dan Jackson, and Chuck Clark.

But Maddox has already proved his worth by filling the shoes of Brian Branch, who went down with a torn Achilles suffered in late 2025 during their Week 14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Head coach Dan Campbell has already acknowledged Maddox’s efforts the other day. 

“Maddox went in there for him the other day, and we thought he did a hell of a job, he really did,” coach Dan Campbell said in December. “I mean, he played his tail off, which is why he’s here…He’s got versatility, a nickel that can play safety...”

With Campbell acknowledging his worth, it would be interesting to know who will be playing at the nickel cornerback position.

How Avonte Maddox Strengthens Detroit Lions Secondary Depth

The re-signing of Avonte Maddox is about reliability in an already crowded room. Compared to the rest of the group, he brings a different level of balance.

Thomas Harper has been productive with a 77.8 PFF grade over 482 snaps and 37 tackles, showing steady development. Whereas the new signee, Chuck Clark, adds experience with a 70.3 grade, and he also played 437 snaps last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

It is worth noting that he recorded 31 solo tackles, but his role leans more toward traditional safety play. 

At the end, Christian Izien from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sits at a 51.3 PFF grade with 167 snaps played and 15 tackles.  He is still finding his consistency in the game.

This is where Avonte Maddox fits, right between reliability and versatility. His 79.1 PFF grade shows efficiency, but more importantly, he can shift between nickel and safety without disrupting the scheme.

This flexibility gives the Lions the ability to adjust matchups, cover injuries, and rotate players without losing structure in the secondary.
