One NFL insider has expressed doubts about Jahmyr Gibbs' contract situation. According to him, the Detroit Lions star running back's contract extension talks "do not seem to be as active."

NFL analyst and ESPN insider Ian Rapoport revealed that Gibbs seems to be holding in, as he did not join practice at the Lions' training camp. Rapoport believes Gibbs may not take part in the camp while the contract situation remains unresolved.

"As far as Jahmyr Gibbs, the conversation does not seem to be as active," Rapoport said on July 29. "He is holding in as well. He's not really taking part in practice at all. Would not be surprised if we don't see Gibbs participating in practice until they get some sort of real significant progress on a contract extension."

Rapoport made this statement on the From The Insiders show on the NFL Network. Gibbs is currently on a four-year rookie contract signed in 2023, which includes a fully guaranteed $17.8 million deal and a $9.9 million signing bonus.

However, since the Lions exercised their fifth-year option, Gibbs is tied down through 2027.

Jahmyr has shown excellent performance since being the No. 12 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, totaling 1,223 rushing yards, 616 receiving yards, and 1,839 scrimmage yards, along with 18 rushing and receiving touchdowns last year.

Although Gibbs' contract extension talks may have been on hold, one of his teammates isn't worried about Gibbs holding in during recent training camp days.

Lions running back Sione Vaki isn't worried about Gibbs' behavior at all. He seemed to have complete faith in his teammate and fully supported his decision to hold in.

"He definitely wants to be out here," Vaki said on July 29, according to The Athletic. "That’s something he emphasized. This isn’t something he’d do. It’s just a business. He definitely wants to be with his teammates, man. He’s that kind of guy. So, anytime we get to see him, we’re just loving him up, telling him, ‘Do what you gotta do."

Teammate Amon St. Brown also echoed similar sentiment about the situation, and did not seem too concerned.

“He’s still in the building, he’s still at all the meetings and everything,” St. Brown said. “I think the players understand what’s going on.”

The training camp of the Lions has started on July 25 and will run until August 27. The team is currently practicing at the Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park, Michigan.

It is still unclear how long it will take the Lions to offer Gibbs a contract extension.

However, given his market value of $60.4 million for a three-year deal, with an average annual salary pushing the $20 million mark, the deal will be expensive for the Lions and lucrative for Gibbs.
