Latest NFL Controversy Sparks Matthew Stafford-Taylor Decker Reunion Talk

Taylor Decker looked set to spend an 11th season in Detroit, but a pay-cut request changed everything. The longtime Lions tackle is now a free agent. However, there’s a chance he might reunite with his former teammate Matthew Stafford.

The Los Angeles Rams Left tackle, Alaric Jackson, was arrested on a felony domestic b****** charge and was later released after paying a $50,000 bail.

"So if, and it's a big 'if' with a lot of unknowns right now, Jackson get disciplined by the league office again, who could the Rams turn to to fill the void at left tackle?" Brad Berreman of the Side Line Report wrote on Friday. "Enter Decker, who of course spent the first five seasons of his career protecting Rams' quarterback Matthew Stafford's blindside in Detroit."

The NFL has not intervened in this matter as of now, but the development has brought renewed attention to Jackson's past disciplinary issues.

He served a two-game suspension in 2024 for violating the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy, with the details of the incident later coming to light through a lawsuit filed last November.

Decker spent the first five seasons of his career protecting Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford's blindside in Detroit. A reunion with Stafford could make the Rams an intriguing landing spot for Taylor Decker, provided the team is willing to bring him aboard.

Last season, Decker played 14 games while dealing with a shoulder injury. Despite that, he earned a 67.9 overall PFF grade, ranking 41st among 89 qualified offensive tackles across 894 offensive snaps.

Though Yahoo Sports gave him a C grade, calling it the least effective season of his career, he is still determined to give it one more shot before calling time on his career.

That said, the Rams are an enticing deal for Decker as they offer the veteran tackle a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl.

Should the Rams Consider Taylor Decker?

Earlier this week, the Rams were considering Wanya Morris. However, after he was traded to Atlanta, Los Angeles will have to look elsewhere for tackle depth.

That’s where Taylor Decker comes in. The veteran tackle brings in a decade of NFL experience, including a Pro Bowl nod in 2024.

“You could put Taylor Decker out there in L.A. to play with his former teammate, Matthew Stafford, and I’m sure Decker would be very, very consistent and solid for the Rams. Keep an eye on that. Keep an eye on it,” said Matt Dery of the Locked On Lions podcast this Tuesday.

While the insider believes that Taylor Decker might end up in the Rams, finance would be the biggest hurdle. According to Over The Cap, the Rams have roughly $18.8 million in cap space, meaning they can't realistically absorb Taylor Decker's previous $18.2 million salary while still addressing their other roster needs.

Any potential deal with Decker would likely require him to accept a significantly lower salary. That said, where do you think he'll play next? Share your thoughts in the comments.
