After a disappointing 2025 NFL season, the Detroit Lions are set to enter the upcoming season with one of the NFL’s most closely watched schedules.

As reported by Christian Booher of the Detroit Lions on SI, the Lions are on their redemption tour for undoing their mistakes in the last season. This time, there are three out of five key schedule factors that will affect their success the most in the 2026 NFL campaign. 

Schedule That Matters: Three Games in 12 Days

Per the 2026 NFL official schedule released on May 14, 2026, the Detroit Lions will face plenty of adversity in the three games played within 12 days. 

The Lions will play their first regular game in Munich, Germany, against the New England Patriots on November 15, 2026. 

With lots of traveling, they will return to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 22, 2026, at Ford Field, Detroit. 

Before ending their match streak, the Lions will play against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. 

During this the team will receive less rest and will continue to play with the remaining injury-free athletes.

Schedule That Matters: Divisional Stretch to End Season

Around the end of the season, the Lions will face their NFC North rivals in a stretch of four matches. 

While three remain against their divisional rivals, one will be played against the outsider team.

The match spree will start with the Minnesota Vikings in a primetime game in Week 15 at US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis. 

Then on their home ground with the New York Giants, the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, Chicago, and at last with the Green Bay Packers played at Lambeau Field.  

If the results are in their favor, then the Lions could leverage the matches.

Schedule That Matters: Week 6 Bye

The Detroit Lions received an early bye in Week 6, tied with the Minnesota Vikings for the earliest break among NFC North teams. 

The timing gives Detroit a chance to regroup early in the season. However, it also leaves the team facing its final 12 games without another break.

That stretch could become one of the biggest challenges of the Lions’ season. 

They will spend more than two straight months navigating different rest situations and a demanding late-season grind. This will most definitely put pressure on the roster’s depth, durability, and consistency deep into the playoff race.

Schedule That Does Not Matter: Short Rest in Week 2

The Motown team will open its 2026 NFL season while playing with the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. Followed by the Buffalo Bills.

Here, the Lions will get the shortest resting periods in the whole season. But the same also goes for the Bills. This makes it a fair matchup for both teams.

Schedule That Does Not Matter: Strength of Schedule Metrics

The Detroit Lions will enter the 2026 NFL season with the league’s lowest opponent win percentage from last year, giving them a far more manageable road compared to the brutal slate they faced previously. 

On paper, it creates a strong path back into playoff contention.

Still, NFL schedules rarely stay predictable for long. 

The Lions open the year with three road games in their first five matchups before the bye week, and every season brings unexpected breakout teams capable of changing the landscape quickly. 

The team may have caught a favorable draw, but the margin for error across the league remains thin.
