Despite losing twice to Josh Allen and company, Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown had a short but surprising message for the Bills quarterback.

“I like Josh,” said St. Brown on The St. Brown Podcast on July 22.

Both St. Brown and Allen have faced each other twice. Both games were close single-digit victories for the Bills, with their last matchup against each other being a 48-42 win for the Bills in 2024. Considering his winless record against Buffalo's signal-caller, his high praise was quite unexpected.

During an interaction with Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins at Fanatics Fest, they discussed Allen and the Bills.

"I feel like the Bills have been good for a long time, but haven't gotten over the hump. Me as a player, I'm watching the games like I'm rooting for you guys. I want the Bills to win. You guys in the AFC, Lions in the NFC, so we don't have anything really to cheer for," said St. Brown on The St. Brown Podcast.

Both Allen and St. Brown are key players for their teams, with both of them also having four Pro Bowl appearances each. While St. Brown has become one of the best wide receivers in the league, Allen is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, even winning the MVP award in 2024. 

Allen ended the 2025 season with 3,668 passing yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions and finished third in MVP voting while leading the Bills to the NFL Divisional Round. Meanwhile, St. Brown recorded 1,401 receiving yards and scored 11 touchdowns while making second-team All-Pro.

While Allen has been ranked as the best quarterback in the NFL, St. Brown has also made the list of top wide receivers in the league.

While Allen was ranked first amongst quarterbacks, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on July 15 released the results of the survey for wide receivers. While Ja’Marr Chase of the Bengals ranked first, St. Brown was ranked as the fifth-best wideout in the league.

“St. Brown’s 582 yards after catch in 2025 were third among all receivers,” wrote Fowler. “Another dimension to St. Brown’s game that stands out is his blocking. As one veteran coach says, St. Brown can help the offense function as if it’s in 12 personnel (two tight ends) despite being in 11 personnel (one tight end) because of how he supports the running game.”

St. Brown is also the only player to have recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and score 10 touchdowns or more in each of the last three seasons. That is good enough for second overall in Lions history, trailing only Calvin Johnson, who had four such seasons in nine years. 

However, it is important to note that this is despite the Lions’ offense being inconsistent due to poor playcalling by now-former offensive coordinator John Morton and a poor offensive line.

With those issues sorted out and St. Brown being the main target for Goff on offense, we could see St. Brown gain places in the rankings next year.
