Despite the Detroit Lions' veteran QB Jared Goff's amazing season, the team missed the playoffs for the first time in three years. Now, it looks like the Lions are looking towards the future.

According to CBS analyst Josh Edwards, the Detroit Lions could draft quarterback Carson Raine Beck from the Miami Hurricanes through the 2026 NFL Draft. 

“Beck will be drafted as an early-career backup with future NFL starting potential. Betting on the latter is rich for my blood,” wrote The Ringer’s Todd McShay. “...I could see him having a similar career as a high-end backup who can win games when called on.”

QB Carson Beck started his NCAA career with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2020. Later, he was transferred to the Miami Hurricanes for his last collegiate season in 2025.

If the draft is a success, Beck would land with the Lions as a No. 118 overall pick in the fourth round. In the 2026 NFL Combine, Beck was rated 6.14 with an exceptional production score of 84. 

His Pro Football Focus (PFF) data backs him up. He sits at a PFF grade of 76.3 while throwing for 3,813 passing yards and scoring 30 touchdowns. 

In his collegiate career, Beck won two NCAA national championships as a backup quarterback while playing for the University of Georgia Bulldogs in the seasons 2021 and 2022.

Carson Beck’s gameplay is primarily known for his elite pocket presence, rapid decision-making, and high-level accuracy.

Having a high-end backup for Jared Goff would likely be of interest to the Lions.

How QB Jared Goff Could Benefit From Carson Beck 

Selecting Carson Beck is a strategic move, not a competition against QB Jared Goff. This move is all about support and stability, in the form of depth.

In the last four years, Goff has not missed a single game; he has appeared in all 17 games in each season. From 2022 to 2025, he threw for 18,206 yards, while scoring 130 touchdowns for the Lions. 

But that would not be the case forever. Considering those unforeseen events, a backup development quarterback would be an option for the Lions. 

Drafting Carson Beck as QB2 gives the Motown team a quarterback who understands structure, timing, and rhythm, the same traits Goff relies on to operate efficiently in the pocket. 

During his collegiate career, Beck threw for 11,725 yards, 88 touchdowns, and just 32 interceptions while completing 69.5 percent of his passes. At one point, he was even viewed as a potential first-round pick, which shows the level of trust teams had in his profile.

The logic is simple here, if Goff misses time or the offense needs adjustment, Beck can step in to fill his shoes, without forcing a complete shift in scheme.

The move keeps the offense consistent, reduces risk, and gives the team a reliable option behind him.
