In the last few weeks of the 2026 free agency, the dealings are still on. Jared Goff's former teammate, quarterback Hendon Hooker, has secured a new contract with an AFC franchise, beginning a new chapter after his Lions career.

Hooker has landed a deal with the Tennessee Titans, according to ESPN's Jamie Fowler. This move marks a homecoming for Hooker, as he spent his last two college football seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers.

This move gives some momentum to Hendon Hooker's otherwise stagnant career, as he's struggled to find time on the field in his two-year stint with the Lions.

Hendon Hooker was drafted by Detroit in 2023 as the probable backup to Jared Goff. However, he came to the team already rehabbing an ACL he tore when he was in college. He spent most of the time off the field and was able to appear in only three games across 2023 and 2024. Hooker was 6-of-9 on passes and threw for only 62 yards.

The QB was eventually waived by the Lions in 2025. He made it to the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets, but was cut from their rosters too.

But now that Hendon Hooker is at Tennessee, his struggle to build a name for himself continues. The Titans’ offense is already packed with three quarterbacks: Cam Ward with a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 58.5, followed by Mitchell Trubisky and Will Levis. 

However, Hooker has to fight for his spot, but at least he is on the active roster post his release from the Lions.

Why This Move Could Be a Make-or-Break Opportunity for Hendon Hooker

Landing with the Tennessee Titans allows Hendon Hooker to prove he belongs in the NFL, not just as a backup, but as a viable option moving forward.

The challenge is clear. The Titans already have multiple quarterbacks in the room, which means Hendon Hooker won’t be handed anything. 

Every rep, every preseason snap, and every opportunity will matter. But at the same time, this is his best shot yet. He will likely be competing for the QB3 position at the moment, as Ward will continue as the starter from the previous season, and Trubisky is the likely QB2.

Levis, however, has a chance to become a free agent. That would give Hooker a shot to cement himself as the next option in the depth chart. And if he stays healthy and performs well, he could be a solid option in case either Ward or Trubisky has to miss time.

If Hendon Hooker can’t make an impact here, the window to secure a long-term role in the league could start closing quickly.
