A surprising quarterback has been named a better fit for the Detroit Lions, putting Jared Goff out of the spotlight, and it's none other than the iconic Tom Brady.

Unfortunately, the take has sparked debate around Detroit’s current quarterback situation.

It started with a collaboration that quickly caught attention across the NFL space. A post from Arena Gridiron, featuring Skip Bayless and Underdog, compared Tom Brady across multiple team fits.

When the focus shifted to Detroit, the result stood out, as Brady was surprisingly favored over Jared Goff as the better option for the Lions.

“That's a perfect scenario for him. Running back, St. Brown, he's got a line, he could win a championship with him,” Underdog said.

It was not about legacy, but rather who is a better fit for the upcoming 2026 NFL season when compared to the present top quarterbacks.

The Lions already have the pieces in place, a strong offensive line. Including Penei Sewell, Jahmyr Gibbs, Larry Borom, Cade Mays, Roger McCreary, Ben Bartch, D.J. Scruggs, and the "Sun God" Amon-Ra St. Brown. 

That’s exactly where the argument for Tom Brady started to build.

The reasoning leaned into Brady’s ability to maximize structured offenses. In a system like Detroit’s, built on timing and control, the idea is that Brady’s experience and decision-making could push the team further in high-pressure moments.

“I respect Jared Goff, but Tom once beat him, I know it was a while back in a Super Bowl head-to-head, so I think Detroit would go farther in the postseason with Tom at quarterback over Jared Goff,” Skip Bayless said.

That’s the core of the argument, not who is better overall, but who gives Detroit the higher ceiling when it matters most.

Jared Goff vs Tom Brady Debate Gets Interesting When Fit Meets Legacy

Putting Jared Goff and Tom Brady side by side, the conversation quickly shifts from stats to style, impact, and timing.

Tom Brady was drafted in the 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots out of Michigan. A 6th Round, 199th Overall pick holds a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 79.7 as of 2022 records.

He threw for 4703 yards while scoring 25 touchdowns and just 9 interceptions in his last season.

Whereas for Jared Goff, his PFF grade is 77.7, while throwing for 4564 yards and scoring 34 touchdowns and receiving 8 interceptions last season.

Goff was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2016 NFL Draft out of California as a Round 1, Pick 1 (1st overall).

On paper, the numbers are closer than most would expect. Goff actually edges Brady in touchdown production here, while keeping interceptions low, showing how efficient he has been in the Lions’ structured system. 

Brady, however, brings a different layer, control, experience, and the ability to dictate games beyond the stat sheet.

Still, even Brady has acknowledged what Goff has done.

“I would have never done that,” Brady said, referring to Goff’s strange strategy of using Jahmyr Gibbs on a corner against the Green Bay Packers.

“A running back on a corner, on a quick out… I would throw that 0 percent of the time… but when you have Jahmyr Gibbs?” Brady said on the broadcast.

He pointed to Goff’s willingness to push through adversity and keep the offense moving as something that stood out.
