Jared Goff Snubbed As NFL Analyst Makes Bold Caleb Williams Comparison

NFL analyst Nick Wright has never been shy about his feelings on Jared Goff. The NFL analyst famously called Goff an "awesome civilian" back in 2024. Now, on May 15, on the Woodward Sports Network, he brought that narrative back, this time, in favor of another quarterback over Goff.

Asked to pick between Goff and Caleb Williams, Wright did not hesitate for a single second in picking the Chicago Bears' quarterback since the last two seasons, Caleb Williams.

"I mean, Caleb, because the ceiling is so much higher," Wright said. "I know what I'm going to get with Goff, and it'll be good, I believe. But Caleb, I'm not as sure what I'm going to get, but the ceiling, the potential."

He then reached for the analogy that summed up his entire argument in one line.

"You're talking about a Volvo, a nice Volvo, that's Goff. And you're talking about a Porsche," Wright added.

At just 24 years old and entering only his third NFL season, Caleb Williams still carries the appeal of untapped upside. The young quarterback has already surpassed the 3,000-yard mark in his past two seasons at the Chicago Bears, starting every NFL game.

Meanwhile, despite Jared Goff posting four straight 4,400-yard passing seasons, the 31-year-old veteran is already a more established product, making it easier to project what the Lions can expect moving forward.

Wright also pointed to Ben Johnson's arrival in Chicago as a significant factor behind his confidence in Williams going into 2026. Johnson, of course, built the very Lions offense that made Goff look so good for years in Detroit before leaving for Chicago this offseason.

This wasn't the first time Wright had spoken about Goff's abilities not being exceptional, per se.

What Did Nick Wright Say About Jared Goff in 2024?

This is not a new position for Wright. Back in November 2024, when the Lions were 9-1 and the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl, Wright refused to crown them.

"I don't think you can be the best team in the league when you have a civilian at quarterback," he said at the time on First Things First.

He doubled down on May 15 with the superhero framing.

"One guy has the ability to be a superhero, and the other guy's an awesome civilian," Wright said. "So I will take the superhero."

Goff's numbers tell a consistent story, though. In 2025, he threw for 4,564 yards and 34 touchdowns while completing 68 percent of his passes.

Wright's argument rests almost entirely on ceiling and potential. Goff's argument rests on consistency, production, and wins.

Whether the Volvo or the Porsche gets Detroit or Chicago further in 2026 may be the most compelling storyline in the NFC North this season.
