Although the Detroit Lions missed the playoffs, their quarterback, Jared Goff, had an excellent 2025 season.

Because of his stellar performance, he has been ranked ninth in Nick Shook’s quarterback rankings on the NFL website.

In his piece, he stated, “Jared Goff produced at a rate that was very similar to his last two seasons and tried his best to rescue a Lions offense that declined in 2025."

Goff was statistically the second-best quarterback, just behind the former Detroit man, Matthew Stafford. In 17 games, he racked up 34 touchdowns and threw for 4,564 passing yards. Goff also earned a Pro Bowl selection for his performance throughout the season.

Nick further added that despite his brilliance in the air, the Lions' rushing game let them down.

"Their running game’s disappearance undercut their chances, though, and put a target on his back that he was unable to shed in the final month of the regular season,” he wrote.

Detroit wasn't the league's best running team. They averaged just 120.1 rushing yards per game, despite having running backs like Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. As a result, the opponent defensive units often focused on Goff, who was sacked 38 times.

The Lions finished with a 9-8 record and failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time in three years. Nonetheless, things could change for good, as Goff looks to work with some fresh faces.

New Offensive Coordinator Drew Petzing on Jared Goff

Incoming offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing, has high praise for Jared Goff and wants the star quarterback to play a bigger role this coming season.

Appearing on the Pride of Detroit, Petzing spoke about what makes Goff a valuable asset to the Lions. "He’s as impressive a quarterback as I’ve seen watching tape."

Petzig was severely impressed after watching the tape. He praised Goff for the level of play he has shown in the last couple of years. He further added that he considers Goff another coach, trusting him to call the plays.

“To me, a good quarterback play call relationship. He’s another coordinator and coach on staff. Because of how much time is required to play that position at a high level, and how involved, we don’t do anything without the quarterback touching the ball," said Petzing.

The fans will certainly hope the Petzing-Goff duo will be able to help the Lions into the playoffs this season.
