The Motor City team recently concluded its 2026 NFL OTAs, but its struggles on its redemption path to the Lombardi Trophy are far from over. 

Because of the recent developments in the Atlanta Falcons' roster, the Detroit Lions might lose their star tight end, Sam LaPorta, to the New England Patriots, as the Falcons landed a contract with Kyle Pitts, per Sara Marshall of the Musket Fire. 

Many NFL pundits believe that the Detroit Lions might extend the contract of running back Jahmyr Gibbs, as they did for the linebacker Jack Campbell. 

With the potential contract deal, the Lions would not be able to hold LaPorta once he hits free agency. 

Analysts believe that the Lions might put LaPorta on the trade before his contract ends. 

But the Patriots might try to make the blockbuster trade for the Lions’ TE1, since they need to find a successor for Hunter Henry as he enters his last season of the contract. 

If the deal comes out to be a success, the Patriots could land a long-term contract with Sam LaPorta. 

He has proven his worth in the Lions' roster by becoming the weapon for Jared Goff on the gridiron. He has recorded 186 receptions while covering 2,104 yards for 20 touchdowns.

It is the type of production the Patriots’ Drake Maye may be looking for ahead in the season. 

Amid the trade speculation, the Lions' star TE1 continues to train in the OTAs ahead of making his return to the roster. 

Jared Goff's weapon carries momentum into OTAs

Ahead of the 2026 NFL season, TE Sam LaPorta is making a steady recovery after going through a series of injuries ‌last season, per Lior Lampert of Side Lion Report. 

Per Dave Birkett, Sam LaPorta is not included in the “full-speed team drills” at this point after his return from season-ending injuries. 

Due to this, the new scheme under Drew Petzing is getting affected. 

While addressing the post-OTAs presser, the head coach, Dan Campbell, also talked about the return of LaPorta, where he praised the TE but restrained from giving a clear answer about his return to the team. 

He did mention that LaPorta is given limited exposure to the field.

Ahead of the season and chatter around his potential trade, Sam LaPorta is making sure to do everything to make his return to the Lions.
