Jared Goff-led Lions offense receives major boost in the latest rankings
The Detroit Lions have built one of the NFL's most explosive offenses around quarterback Jared Goff, pairing a balanced rushing attack with reliable pass catchers. As the franchise prepares for the 2026 season, rankings continue to pour in for Detroit's offensive stars
The biggest boost for Detroit came through tight end Sam LaPorta, who again made it to the NFL's elite in ESPN's latest annual rankings in fourth position. His ranking not only shows his individual excellence but also the strength of the connection he has developed with Goff.
"He's got great hands -- he'll make a lot of circus, contested catches, especially in the red zone -- and his blocking is high level," an NFC scout said via Fowler on ESPN. "Just an all-around problem."

The NFC scout praised LaPorta on ESPN, noticing why he was so valuable within Detroit's offense. While many TEs excel as receivers or blockers, LaPorta impacted both roles of the game. This led LaPorta to receive a 4th rank among NFL tight ends this year.
LaPorta has risen as one of the most productive young tight ends since he entered the league. He earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors as a rookie after setting franchise records for TE.
Through the first three seasons, he has recorded 186 receptions, 2,104 receiving yards, and 20 touchdowns.
While Sam LaPorta's place among the NFL's elite TEs has already been confirmed, another analyst believes his biggest season may still be ahead.
CBS Sports predicts Sam LaPorta has a comeback season ahead of him
CBS Sports' Josh Edwards expects that the Lions' TE will grow under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. Petzing's arrival can elevate LaPorta's full potential after the offense sank due to Ben Johnson's departure.
"The entire Detroit offense suffered a setback last season post-Ben Johnson, but LaPorta should be revitalized by new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing," wrote Josh Edwards of CBS Sports.
During Petzing's time with the Arizona Cardinals, Trey McBride grew into one of the NFL's elite pass-catching TEs, and many expect LaPorta to thrive in a similar role.
If the former Pro Bowler returns healthy after his back injury, the Lions could once again feature one of the dangerous passing attacks led by Jared Goff and LaPorta.
