The Lions have been one of the NFL’s most productive offenses over the past few seasons. A key reason is quarterback Jared Goff. However, even those who have a strong appreciation for his game continue to be impressed.

This was the case for newly hired Lions pass game coordinator Mike Kafka, who shared his early observations. While Kafka already held the veteran quarterback in high regard, seeing him up close at minicamp has given him a lasting impression.

“Being in the room with Jared, he’s phenomenal,” said Kafka, per Woodward Sports Network. “He’s one of those guys that I’ve had a ton of respect for from the outside. You look at him, this guy’s like a sniper, he’s into it.”

Kafka has spent time with both the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Giants and was even an interim head coach for the Giants last season. He pointed out that certain parts of Goff’s game became more apparent during this minicamp.

“He’s got great command in the huddle at the line of scrimmage,” said Kafka. “He’s so accurate, you can see the anticipation, the velocity, the timing, the ball placement, all those things that go into the pass game. To watch him operate has been really impressive.”

Goff’s consistency and his traits have allowed the Lions to be the offensive juggernauts they are today. Even though the team did not make it to the playoffs last season, the Lions' offense was ranked fourth in points scored and fifth in total yards.

Individually, Goff threw for 4,564 yards, completed 68% of his passes, and earned his fifth Pro Bowl nod. The veteran QB remained consistent with his production, and some of that credit goes to the supporting cast he had.

Jared Goff Had Third Best Supporting Cast Last Season

The Lions’ offensive line was nowhere near as good as in previous years, and their rushing game was not as effective. However, Goff was still consistent and had elite numbers of 4,564 total yards (2nd best in the league), 34 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions.

According to PFF’s Daire Callagher, Goff also had the third-best supporting cast of any quarterback in 2025, which shows great potential for next season, too.

“As for offenses who made the list for a second consecutive season, it’s no surprise to see the Detroit Lions near the top of the list once again,” wrote Callagher. “A below-average defense was the limiting factor for Detroit in 2025.”

He also mentions how, despite a change in coach, the offense was severely helped by the stars within the team.

“Despite losing offensive play-caller Ben Johnson, quarterback Jared Goff spent yet another year in an outstanding structure, highlighted by stars such as Jahmyr Gibbs and Penei Sewell,” added Callagher.

With many of the same offensive playmakers in the team and an improved offensive line, Goff could lead the team to new heights.
