Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff claps during warmups ahead of the Cleveland Browns game at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025.
The Detroit Lions were ranked among the NFL’s top five supporting casts for starting quarterbacks in a recent Fox Sports list, finishing fifth overall.
FOX Sports analyst Ralph Vacchiano noted that the expectation is for the revamped offensive line to come together quickly and give veteran quarterback Jared Goff enough protection to effectively run Drew Petzing’s offense.
"Veteran QB Jared Goff has a trio of elite skill players, which is a great place to start. Amon-Ra St. Brown has become unstoppable, and Jameson Williams is one of the best big-play receivers in the NFL," wrote Vacchiano.
Vacchiano also described RB Jahmyr Gibbs as “a remarkable combination of power and elusiveness,” while also noting that the Detroit Lions have changed in the backfield.

He added that Gibbs and David Montgomery had formed a strong partnership in recent seasons, but Montgomery is now with the Houston Texans and has been replaced by Isiah Pacheco.
Last season, Goff had a record of 9-8, completing 68% of his passes for 4,564 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
The Lions still ended the season ranked fifth in points scored and total yards per game. This occurred even after offensive issues led to offensive coordinator John Morton losing his play-calling role and being dismissed, per Sports Illustrated.
Jared Goff Could Face Scrutiny If Detroit Struggles Again
According to Heavy.com writer Parker Hurley, several factors contributed to the Detroit Lions missing the playoffs in 2025, including a change at offensive coordinator, adjustments along the offensive line, and inconsistent performances across the roster.
Hurley noted that quarterback Jared Goff remained healthy throughout the season but still struggled to elevate the offense amid those issues.
Hurley also discussed some of the key questions surrounding Detroit heading into 2026. He mentioned uncertainty around tight end Sam LaPorta returning to full form, after a back injury, and the arrival of new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
Hurley noted that LaPorta's health record remains solid and the roster remains deep.
Looking ahead, Hurley added that if Detroit struggles again in 2026, more attention could shift toward Goff after several seasons in which the team has surrounded him with strong offensive talent.
He also highlighted how competitive the NFC remains, with the Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles all mentioned alongside Detroit among the conference’s stronger supporting casts.
