In this NFL season, the Detroit Lions would enter the gridiron with the aspirations of undoing the mistakes that cost them the 2025 NFL playoffs. For this, they have a clear task from the Lions Hall of Fame.
While having a conversation with Braylon Edwards of Woodward Sports, former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, aka Megatron, assigned a task to Dan Campbell and Jared Goff about distributing the ball effectively among numerous playmakers to maintain a top-tier offensive standard.
“Now it's upon the coach to get them the ball. You know, it's upon the line to do their thing so that the quarterback can get them the ball,” said Johnson. “It's upon Jared to get them the ball, you know. So it's a team effort. But the receivers in specific, dog, we got a hell of a court.”
During the conversation, Megatron highlighted the names of the Detroit Lions' star WR trio: Issac TeSlaa, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jameson Williams.
“So we've seen Jamo, how he can make plays down the field. He takes the short and takes it long,” Megatron said. “Tesla can go up and make a play when the ball's in the air. And we know St.Brown, you know, he can make plays anywhere on the field.”
They are the playmakers for the Motown team, and it would be up to Campbell to orchestrate adequate game time and play design for them.
That's not just it, Goff also has the responsibility to make the precise throws that will allow the O-line to do their thing by rushing downfield and scoring touchdowns.
Their stats back Johnson’s faith in the trio. Even the Lions missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record. But these players maintained their production throughout the season.
Amon-Ra remained the elite core player for the Lions by scoring 11 TDs in 17 games while covering 1,401 yards.
Similarly, Williams followed Amon-Ra and delivered seven TDs in 1,117 yards. The young gun TeSlaa showed promising gameplay and established himself as a stellar red-zone threat.
If Campbell and Goff can successfully unlock this core's full potential, Detroit's offense will be nearly impossible to slow down
Dan Miller Highlights the Importance of Bond Within the Franchise
In a similar manner, the legendary broadcaster and voice of the Detroit Lions, Dan Miller, talked about the importance of the bond between the former and present players of the franchise.
"Look, they're a family. I mean, you've all been through a shared experience of playing for this organization,” Miller said while speaking to Spem Morax of the Woodward Sports. “Whether it was in the tough times or now, these guys that are coming together and enjoying a little bit more success."
During the conversation, Miller weighed in on the importance of interaction between the different generations of the Lions players.
As Johnson shared his words of wisdom on giving more opportunities to the star WR trio, similarly, Miller believes these interactions will help the Lions torchbearers to push the franchise to new heights.
Such wisdom from franchise icons like Johnson and Sanders ensures that Detroit’s legendary culture continues to shape its future success.
