The Detroit Lions’ new offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing, may have big plans in store for quarterback Jared Goff.

Appearing on the Pride of Detroit, Petzing spoke at length about Goff’s play style and attributes that make him so valuable to the team.

"He’s as impressive a quarterback as I’ve seen watching tape. Coming into the interview process and watching the tape, I think you start to really appreciate how good he really is," Petzing said about his starting QB.

“To me, a good quarterback play call relationship. He’s another coordinator and coach on staff... So, everything we do has to be based around his skill set, making him comfortable, allowing him to see the game the way that he thinks he sees it best," said Petzing.

True to Petzing’s words, Goff had a great season. He managed to rake in 4,564 yards and 34 touchdowns and ranked second in passing yards for the third time in a row. Earlier, when Ben Johnson was the offensive coordinator, he let Goff make decisions and had great coordination with the star quarterback. 

However, with Johnson’s departure to become the Chicago Bears head coach, the Lions hired John Morton. Unfortunately, Morton couldn't find success and was fired two days after the last season ended. 

 Drew Petzing, like Johnson, plans to give a more prominent role to quarterback Goff. The Detroit Lions would hope that Jared Goff continues his performance under the guidance of the new offensive coordinator.

Drew Petzing’s hire as offensive coordinator has come at a critical time. In his introduction video for the fans, Petzing revealed the reason why he thought he was offered the job.

"I think it’s, it’s the confidence that I go about the job with. It’s my background in a lot of different rooms. And one of the key points of being an offensive coordinator is you have to be in charge of everything, and you have to hold people accountable," said Petzing.

Before coming to Detroit, the 38-year-old was with the Arizona Cardinals for the previous three seasons. He helped them have two of their best rushing seasons with 2,365 yards covered in 2023 and 2,451 covered in 2024.
