Jared Goff Calls for "Urgency" As QB Details Key Reason Behind Loss to Bills

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff claps during warmups ahead of the Cleveland Browns game at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025.
Jared Goff and the Lions entered Week 2 with plenty of expectations, but their loss to the Bills exposed a familiar problem. Detroit fell into another early hole and eventually lost 41-31 despite mounting a late comeback attempt. For Goff, the defeat showed exactly why the Lions need more urgency from the opening snap.
Buffalo built a 27-10 halftime advantage, leaving Detroit with another uphill battle. The Lions eventually fought their way back into contention, but Josh Allen and the Bills had created too much separation. Goff believes Detroit cannot keep relying on late rallies to rescue games.
“We knew what type of game it was going to be and we dug ourselves in that hole and against a team like that with the offense they have, it's really hard to get back in it. We got close, we were down 10 there with some opportunities to get back in it, but we dug ourselves in too big a hole. I think like urgency early on, you know, I think for the last two games really, like we've had good moments, but I think we need to really understand we need to start good. We just start on that momentum and ignite some of those plays in the first drive, in the second drive, and not allow ourselves to get in these holes.”
Goff's message goes beyond the loss to Buffalo. Detroit has shown good moments during its opening two games, but those stretches have not been consistent enough. The Lions now need to turn those flashes into complete performances before another deficit becomes too difficult to overcome.
Dan Campbell Knows the Lions Must Fix Their Run Game
Campbell has already acknowledged that Detroit needs to become more efficient running the football. He believes the Lions have plenty of room to improve, particularly given the talent in their backfield.
That improvement could also help Goff and the passing game. If Detroit establishes the run early, the offense can create rhythm instead of constantly trying to erase deficits.
The Lions still have plenty of season left to correct these issues. However, Goff's call for urgency shows that Detroit understands the early problems need fixing now.
