The Detroit Lions barely escaped their season opener against the New Orleans Saints. After a back-and-forth battle, the game went to overtime before Detroit eventually secured a dramatic 31-30 victory. A huge reason for that win was Jahmyr Gibbs.

The Lions running back exploded for 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns, putting together a performance that once again showcased his elite ability.

However, Gibbs' monster workload has also sparked questions among fans. After all, he finished the game with around 30 touches, raising concerns about whether his body can handle that kind of workload throughout an entire season.

Speaking on 97.1 The Ticket, Jared Goff was asked about those concerns. The Lions quarterback made it clear that the team intends to continue leaning heavily on its star running back.

“The guy is as good of a player as there is in this league... We're going to try to give him the ball as much as we can.”

Goff acknowledged that Gibbs could eventually need time off, just like any player during a long NFL season. However, until that happens, Detroit intends to get the football into his hands as often as possible.

Considering what Gibbs just did against New Orleans, it is difficult to argue with that approach. The challenge will be keeping him healthy while maximizing one of the Lions' most dangerous weapons.

The Lions Have a Committee Plan to Back Up Jahmyr Gibbs

Fortunately, Dan Campbell already has a plan for managing Gibbs' workload. Rather than relying on one player to replace him, the Lions intend to form a committee featuring Jacob Saylors and Sione Vaki.

Both players can contribute as runners while also providing value as pass protectors and special teams players. That should allow Gibbs to get the occasional breather without leaving the offense completely exposed.

If Campbell's plan works, Detroit could have the best of both worlds. Gibbs gets plenty of opportunities while Saylors and Vaki help keep him fresh for the long haul.
