Jahmyr Gibbs is taking his preparation to another level

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is finding a different way to prepare for the biggest role of his NFL career.

With the 2026 season approaching, the three-time Pro Bowler has added mixed martial arts training to his offseason routine, giving him another way to sharpen his physical tools.

Attention was drawn to his routine after Kings MMA shared footage on Instagram of Gibbs training Muay Thai with renowned coach Rafael Cordeiro. Woodward Sports Network later reshared the video on X.

The Lions running back has been working at Kings MMA in Huntington Beach, California, and has completed more than 20 hour-long sessions.

The training comes as Gibbs prepares for an expanded role in Detroit's backfield following David Montgomery's departure. With the Lions expecting even more from their explosive playmaker, he is leaving little to chance.

Jahmyr Gibbs’ unusual training could benefit him as the Lions’ lead back

Jahmyr Gibbs' unusual training could have a direct impact on his game, particularly as Detroit prepares to rely on him more heavily.

The running back said MMA had improved his body control, base and hand speed, while also helping him get his hands up quicker when blocking. The constant movement has also boosted his conditioning.

With Gibbs already coming off a 320-touch season, those improvements could help him handle the physical demands of an expanded role and remain effective throughout the year.

That preparation could become valuable late in games, when fatigue can separate productive backs from those who wear down.
