Jack Campbell’s contract extension could have shattered the linebacker market across the NFL. Instead, the All-Pro defender has chosen a different path that has caught the attention of fans and players alike.

The Lions signed Campbell to a four-year, $81 million extension through the 2030 season. Right after the contract, he issued an apology.

“I feel like for me, I don’t need to be the highest paid, even though the guys around the league would probably appreciate that, because it bumps up everything, so I’m sorry to them,” Campbell said in reference to him having the ability to bump up the salaries of other linebackers in the future.

Even though it makes him one of the highest-paid linebackers in NFL history, Campbell’s decision has surprised many.

Several projections expected him to command over $100 million. However, he admitted that he avoided being the league’s highest-paid linebacker and apologized for reducing negotiating leverage for others.

However, he explained how he was happy with his contract and that he wanted to do right by the team as well. 

“Let’s be realistic here, I already have more than enough,” said Campbell. “I want to help the team in any way possible, just to continue to keep the core together. I feel like it was fair for the team.”

According to Mike Payton from AtoZ Sports, due to this extension, Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd is likely to get around the $90 million range rather than a $100 million deal.

Campbell’s extension has helped the Lions maintain future roster flexibility. However, there is still one concern. The contract has four void years, and the Lions have a lot of other contracts with many void years, including deals for Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

While the structure helps keep the current core together, it could also create significant dead cap charges in future seasons. That will become especially important as the Lions prepare for potential long-term extensions for players like Jahmyr Gibbs in the coming years.

What Does Jack Campbell's Extension Mean For Gibbs’ Situation?

Standing in the same room three years later brought back memories for Campbell, who was once there beside Jahmyr Gibbs a day after being drafted 18th overall by Detroit in 2023. Campbell reflected honestly on that draft night, when the Lions surprised many by selecting him just six picks after Gibbs.

The 3X Pro Bowler running back's contract was set to expire after 2026. However, the Lions exercised their right to a fifth team-held year since he was a first-round pick in the 2023 draft. Campbell’s extension showed that the front office wants to keep and reward its own players.

It could be difficult to do so with Gibbs. He has a 17-game average of 1,242 yards and 14 touchdowns and has only missed two games in three years. He is expected to earn around $20 million per year, the same as Saquon Barkley.

However, Gibbs will only be 25 when his contract expires. With age and output all in favour of Gibbs, the Lions could be forced to pay his highest possible market value. That would mean a four-year deal worth $92 million with $65 million guaranteed.

Campbell’s extension may have given the Lions added flexibility in the short term, but it also highlighted the difficult balancing act that awaits Detroit’s front office.
