If the latest projections are to be true, the Detroit Lions won’t have to worry about J.J. McCarthy anytime soon. While McCarthy entered the offseason hoping to cement himself as Minnesota’s franchise quarterback, the latest outlook suggests he faces an uphill climb heading into training camp.
One of the NFL’s most intriguing storylines this offseason is the quarterback competition in Minnesota between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray. After the Cardinals cut him this offseason, Murray joined Minnesota and is emerging as the frontrunner for the QB1 role.
According to Fanduel odds, Murray is currently the heavy favorite to start the Vikings’ season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Murray is -1000 favorite to start. This news is another setback for McCarthy, who has struggled for consistency since Minnesota drafted him 10th overall in 2024.

McCarthy missed his rookie year due to injury and had mixed results during his first extended action in 2025.
Despite a record of 6-4 as a starter, J.J. McCarthy threw 11 touchdowns with 12 interceptions and posted a pass completion rate of 57.6%. However, he improved later in the season, but it seems not to have been enough.
This situation is even more notable considering the Vikings traded up to select J.J. McCarthy, and yet, his grip on the starting role looks anything but secure.
Everything remains highly relevant for Detroit, as Minnesota used a regular-season sweep over the Lions last year to drop Dan Campbell's squad into an unexpected last-place finish in the NFC North.
The Lions have reason to believe in the hype, too, after what Dan Campbell had to say about the new offensive coordinator.
Dan Campbell Commends the Impact of Drew Petzing
Drew Petzing is replacing John Morton this offseason after the offense struggled with consistency. Recently, during the OTAs press conference, Dan Campbell mentioned how the biggest improvement that Petzig brought has changed the communication issues that were present last season.
“I think just everything is being tied together. There’s one voice and then it spreads from there,” said Campbell. “I think just having that one voice, clear communication.”
Petzing, while talking to reporters on Thursday, mentioned how he isn’t trying to overhaul things completely, but how any changes are being handled well by the players.
“There’s a number of vets (here) who have played at a high level. So, I don’t want to come in here and rip it all up and make them learn an entirely new language,” said Petzig. “There’s going to be changes, and I think they’ve done a great job of handling that.”
Could Petzing help the Lions get back to their best and help challenge for the Super Bowl, or will it be a roller coaster of a year like in 2025? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
