It's all poison" - Lions DC Kelvin Sheppard takes aim at outside noise surrounding Detroit

The Detroit Lions entered Week 5 facing questions about their defense, with defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard coming under fire after a difficult start. This leaves Detroit needing a response against the Arizona Cardinals.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Sheppard dismissed the scrutiny surrounding his defensive unit and stressed that outside perceptions could be misleading, calling it "poison":

“I couldn't care less about perceptions. I couldn't care less about the talk. It's all poison,” adding that praise could be even more damaging: “The praise is the big poison.”

Sheppard stressed that Detroit must contribute across all three phases rather than depend on its offense to compensate for defensive struggles. He called the suggestion that another unit must carry his defense “ultra disrespectful.”

“We're going to do our one-third here, come hell or high water. Point, blank, period,” he declared.

Sheppard's message was clear: Detroit's defense must deliver on its own rather than let outside noise dictate its response.

Lions defense struggles through four weeks

The Lions are 2-2 after allowing 423.8 yards per game through four weeks, the most in the NFL. They have conceded 31.8 points per game, ranking 31st.

Detroit gave up 32 points and 445 total yards in its Week 4 loss to Carolina. Bryce Young threw for 329 yards, exposing the defense's struggles against the pass.

The pass rush offers a bright spot. Detroit ranks second in the league with 15 sacks, but that pressure has not produced consistent stops.

The Lions need to turn their pass-rush production into more complete defensive performances if they hope to reverse this recent trend.
