The Detroit Lions have traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans, and it was an emotional moment for the fans and the players.

Especially for Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was not happy with the trade at all.

In the latest episode of the St. Brown podcast, the Lions WR discussed the trade. The Lions' WR revealed how he personally felt about not having Montgomery as a teammate anymore. He said:

"I feel like he was, no matter what the situation was, we all knew that he wanted more carries and wanted to play more. He never made it by himself. He was always all about the team, which I know is hard sometimes. And especially in his position, he's an RB1 on 31 other teams. So, I mean, he's damn near an RB1 for us. "

In his last 2 season with the Lions, Montgomery had a limited role as the running back. Meanwhile, Jahmyr Gibbs was racking up numbers. In the 2025 season, Montgomery posted a career-low rushing total, 716 yards, and did not start any games. Trading him to the Texans might be a profit for both of them.

Because now the running back has gone to a team that will play him as the RB1. Plus, his cap hit was going to be $6 million this year and grow to $9 million in 2027.

Why would Lions spend that much for RB2?

Browns also explained how the Lions' system was not fit for D.Mo, but also said: "Anyway, yes. Selfishly, as I said, I'm upset."

And why wouldn't he be? The two of them were good friends.

Brown also said in the podcast that the two of them used to sit together in all meetings. When the trade news broke, St. Brown posted the announcement on his Instagram story with a broken-heart emoji.

But St. Brown Is Also Happy for David Montgomery

On the same podcast episode, the Lions WR expressed his joy for Montgomery going to the Texans.

"I'm really happy for D. Mo because I know how much, you know, he wanted to have a bigger role on offense. And I think he's going to get that in Houston," he said.

He also praised the Texans' defense, their receivers, and their quarterback, C.J. Stroud.

"So, I think he's going to a good team where he's going to be able to, you know, be the primary back," he continued. And he is right because the Texans needed an RB.

The Texans ranked 22nd in rushing yards per game (108). Woody Marks was the team leader in rushing with 703 yards, with 8 started games at running back for the Texans during the 2025 season. David Montgomery can do better. Don't you think?
