All-Pro running back Jahmyr Gibbs has already made one memorable jersey number switch in his Detroit Lions career. But during an appearance on the St. Brown Podcast, he opened up on the number that he desperately wants to have.

Gibbs made a change in jersey numbers from No. 26 during his rookie year to his current No. 0. However, he still wants his favored No. 1. The only problem is that No. 1 is currently being used by wide receiver Jameson Williams.

“I need it, bruh - that’s me,” said Gibbs on September 17, 2025. “Bro, I’ve had [No.] 1 since 8th grade.”

Gibbs, who opened up on the September 17, 2025 episode of the St. Brown Podcast, also joked that in a hypothetical situation, if Nike were to ask him to buy out all his current jerseys for him to get his desired No.1, he would do so.

“I’ll pay it,” said Gibbs. “Ok, I’m gonna have more money then.”

Williams had also switched numbers from No.9 to his current number ahead of the 2025 season, and while Gibbs might want to switch his number, it certainly does not look like it will happen this season. 

However, his number has certainly not affected Gibbs’ career so far. After getting drafted 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gibbs has averaged 1,193 rushing yards per season and amassed 3,580 total rushing yards.

He also broke the record for most touchdowns before the age of 24 with 49, breaking Lions legend Barry Sanders’ record of 47.

This has caused one NFL analyst to make a bold prediction for Gibbs next season.

Gibbs predicted to reach a new level by an NFL analyst

While Gibbs is one of the best running backs in the NFL, the 2026 season will be the first in his career where he won’t have to share touches with running back David Montgomery after he was traded to the Houston Texans in the offseason.

However, Rotoballer’s NFL analyst Quincy Milton III predicts Gibbs to thrive under this new responsibility.

According to Milton, with the Lions having changed offensive coordinators from John Morton and Drew Petzing, he envisions Gibbs breaking Barry Sanders’ single- season rushing record of 2,053 rushing yards that he had recorded in 1997.

“Given how good Sanders was in his prime, Gibbs would have to rush for the fourth-most single-season rushing yards of all time,” wrote Milton on July 14. “The Lions brought in Drew Petzing to coordinate the offense as well. Petzing coordinated an excellent running game in Arizona over the last couple of years. Gibbs could be a smashing success in 2026.”

It is definitely possible for Gibbs to break the record. In his best season, the 2024 season, he averaged 5.6 yards per carry on 250 attempts. If Gibbs gets more touches, he could be the 10th person to have a 2,000 rushing yard season.
