The Houston Texans almost poached another key player from the Detroit Lions. Following the signing of David Montgomery, the Texans reportedly set their sights on linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez. But the Lions weren't letting him go that easily.

As reported by KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, "They were in on Malcolm Rodriguez from the Detroit Lions. Malcolm Rodriguez was on their list, too. But he opted to stay with the Lions on a one-year deal."

The 26-year-old linebacker joined the Detroit Lions in 2022. He played 50 games with the Lions, tallying 112 solo tackles, 52 assists, and 3 sacks. In his four seasons, he has recorded 2 forced fumbles and 3 defended passes.

And after signing running back David Montgomery, the Texans pursued another Lions player. Instead, the Houston Texans went for linebacker Jake Hummel.

He has played 58 games with 28 solo tackles and 21 assists. Rodriguez would likely have entered the Texans’ defense as a depth piece rather than a clear starting option.

Why the Lions Were Determined to Keep Malcolm Rodriguez

The Detroit Lions had tactical roster reasons to retain Malcolm Rodriguez despite interest from the Houston Texans.

The Lions offer Rodriguez a more realistic opportunity for playing time. While Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes are established starters, there remains uncertainty around the linebacker rotation following roster changes, leaving room for Rodriguez to compete for meaningful snaps.

Since Rodriguez has once played as a starter for the Lions, he can be a good fit for Alex Anzalone’s spot. His stats showcase his effectiveness against the run and as a downhill defender.

Detroit values his familiarity with Dan Campbell’s system and the competitive culture that allows players to earn starting roles through performance.
