Running back David Montgomery’s status with the Detroit Lions continues to dazzle fans.

There were rumors that the veteran would be traded out this season, after Jahmyr Gibbs took the starting berth.

David Montgomery was drafted to the Lions in 2024 with a two-year, $18.25 million contract.

He endured a difficult season in 2025 with 716 rushing yards, 8 touchdowns, and a career-low 158 carries. He played second fiddle to Jahmyr Gibbs, who had a stellar season.

Jahmyr Gibbs stole the spotlight, posting 1,839 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns. Montgomery was seemingly upset for not getting the starting position, and rumors swirled regarding his potential departure from the Lions.

Jahmyr Gibbs, however, was keen to have Montgomery stay, given his experience.

Speaking to the Detroit Free Press at the Pro Bowl, he said, “Of course I want David back,” Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs told the Detroit Free Press at the Pro Bowl.

“The whole team would want David back, but it’s ultimately up to him. He’s going to do what’s best for him and his family, and whatever he decides to do, I’m going to support 100%. But of course we want him back, though.”

To add to the rumors, SleeperNFL posted on X, asking fans, “I wonder where David Montgomery plays football in 2026”.

Lions fans then took to X to voice their support of Montgomery.

“Absolutely not, he’s a demon,” one fan posted vociferously.

David Montgomery has had a great record with the Lions so far. In 2023, he played 14 games, rushing for 1,015 yards on 219 carries and 13 scores. He also recorded 16 catches for 117 yards.

In 2024, he continued his streak by playing in 14 games, rushing for 775 yards with 185 carries and 12 touchdowns. During this season, the Lions also posted a franchise-best 15-2.

Based on these records, fans do not want to let Montgomery go. “Absolutely do NOT want to trade him,” one fan wrote on X.

Some fans also believe that the Lions can't depend on Gibbs and need a backup if Gibbs were to get injured.

“Definitely want to keep him. Especially with how valuable Gibbs is to us. If he happens to get hurt, we need a great backup. Plus, the duo deserves to run in a Petzing O,” one fan posted.

As per the latest reports on Monday, March 2, 2026, the Detroit Lions agreed to trade David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.
