When it comes to Caleb Williams, there are many debates over just how good he actually is. This has caused constant comparisons with other stars. However, one Chicago Bears fan and analyst has drawn a line with the comparisons after Williams was compared to Justin Fields.

Both drafted by the Bears, Fields is currently the backup to Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs. Both of their careers have panned out very differently, and one NFL analyst knows why.

“Justin did have hype, but it was all because of his rushing ability,” wrote Philip Charles VanDerHeyden IV. “Those of us who believed in Justin were projecting that he could become a better passer. He never took that step.”

Williams had a poor pass accuracy of 58.1% last season, while Fields, long been criticized for his passing, had an accuracy of 62.7% last season. 

VanDerHeyden, in his X post, also defended Williams and explained how some stats are overlooked and how the gap between the two players is much more than some might let on.

“He’s also a record setting #1 in terms of TD-INT ratio. No other #1 pick has ever been as good as him from that perspective,” he continued. “Anyone with a football brain being objective can watch Caleb Williams play football and understand that he is a good quarterback.”

Williams has already surpassed a career milestone Fields never reached: 3,500 passing yards in a single season. Fields never surpassed 3,000 passing yards in any single season during his time as the Bears’ starter.

When Fields was drafted, the expectation was that his elite athleticism would buy time for his passing to catch up. His current role as Mahomes’ backup signals that NFL evaluators no longer see him as a long-term starter.

Furthermore, Williams has already overtaken Fields in terms of best quarterback for the Bears in recent history.

Williams ranked in the top 100 NFL players ranking

In the NFL top 100 list voted by players, the best that a Chicago Bears quarterback has ever been ranked since the start of it was 86th in 2023 by Justin Fields. Williams has been ranked much higher at 51st in the latest rankings, per NFL on X.

The former first-round pick of the 2024 NFL Draft has certainly proved his ability and deserves to be ranked. While some argue Williams deserves a higher ranking, he already outranks his NFC North rival Jordan Love (72nd).

Love was ranked 72nd, 21 spots lower than Williams, proving that Williams is starting to be noticed, not just by fans, but also by players alike. However, the Bears will be hoping for Williams to continue improving and will want him to rank higher next year.

Things certainly seem to be moving in that direction with Williams already becoming the cover athlete for the Madden NFL 27 game, while also being ranked as one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league after a survey conducted by ESPN.

Williams will be going into next season with a lot of expectations. It will certainly be interesting to see how he does next season.
