The Detroit Lions fans can breathe a sigh of relief. In a social media post, David Montgomery put an end to rumors around his exit.

Replying to a post on X from The Underdog NFL, Montgomery said, “ Damn, Dmo told you that ?”, questioning the source of the information.

Speculation grew that Montgomery wanted to leave the Lions, as running back Jahmyr Gibbs played the lead role last season with 18 scrimmage touchdowns and 1,839 scrimmage yards. In contrast, Montgomery had a difficult season with 716 rushing yards, 158 attempts, and 908 yards from scrimmage.

Moreover, his contract extension was a matter of discussion for the front office, with general manager Brad Holmes keen on keeping the veteran running back.

Holmes said to the Detroit Free Press, “We’d love to have him. Kind of want to put last year in the rearview and just move forward. But obviously, a player has to want to be at a certain place as well. So those conversations are still fluid, and we’ll just kind of see how it goes.

Head coach Dan Campbell also indicated what he thought of Montgomery at the NFL Combine. “But certainly he knows how I feel. Drew loves him, too. I mean, who wouldn’t? This guy, he’s a h*** of a back. Certainly, it’s been healthy conversations. David’s a pro, so we’ll figure this out”, he said.

This development is a positive sign for the Lions as they look to rebound from a bottom-of-the-division finish last season.

Brad Holmes on Detroit Lions’ Super Bowl chances

The Detroit Lions' future appeared to be bright a couple of seasons ago when they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 NFC Championship. A bottom-of-the-table finish last season in the NFC North standings didn’t help matters, with the fans losing faith in the front office.

General manager Brad Holmes sounded confident when a fan questioned the team's chances of winning a Lombardi Trophy.

Speaking on The Rich Eisen show, Holmes said, “I would push back on that, just because, even with the dilemma we’re facing now, is that we have a lot of young, ascending players that are eligible for extensions. Even look at this past season, I want to say that we had six Pro Bowl players, we had three All-Pro caliber players that weren’t even available. That could have been more, and then also our quarterback, who’s in his prime, he’s playing at a high level. Those alone keep that window open.”

Despite their defensive woes, the fans should be confident with offensive threats and elite playmakers like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs in the ranks.
