It’s a move that could quietly make a big difference. Brad Holmes' Detroit Lions have added a new piece, and it’s the kind of move that directly benefits Jared Goff heading into the new season.

Again, landing a deal in the free agency, Brad Holmes signed free agent Ben Bartch from the San Francisco 49ers. The guard Ben Bartch was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round (116th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Saint John's (MN).

Bartch is known for his depth at the guard positions. According to Larry Krueger of the Krueg Show, Ben Bartch is one of the most durable guys in the field. Holding a Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 71.1, the veteran has played 200 snaps.

However, just how effective he'll be with the Lions depends on whether Bartch remains injury-free. In 2025, he suffered a series of injuries. In week 13, he suffered a LisFranc while playing against the Cleveland Browns.

Before that, in Week 2 also suffered a high ankle sprain against the New Orleans Saints. He only played for six matches and was out for the rest of the season. Similarly, three games in 2024 and five games in 2022.

Yet, with the Detroit Lions looking to add depth in their offensive line and increase protection for their quarterback, Jared Goff, Ben Bartch would definitely act as the key piece.

For GM Brad Holmes, this approach is new. Throughout the free agency period, he has followed the same pattern, running back Isiah Pacheco, edge D.J. Wonnum, cornerback Roger McCreary, and even center Cade Mays.

Holmes focused on building a unit that can hold up across the full season, while maintaining their rotational positions with the schematic theories of the leadership. 

The Lions had continued to build their roster around Jared Goff, to keep him comfortable in the pocket and allow him to do his thing. 

Adding multiple capable pieces allows the system to stay stable even when changes happen. It also creates internal competition, which helps maintain performance levels throughout the season.

This approach also fits how the Lions build their roster overall. The core is developed through the draft, while free agency is used to support and balance the lineup. 

Instead of one major addition, Holmes spreads value across multiple positions, making the unit more flexible and less dependent on a single player.
