Will Dan Campbell end up in the hot seat in 2026? NFL analyst Mike Florio has made a bold prediction, suggesting the head coach's job is on the line heading into the 2026 season.

After finishing last in the division and missing the playoffs, the Detroit Lions under Dan Campbell are working for a comeback in the 2026 NFL season. However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes this could be his ride with Detroit if he fails.

"I think between Dan Campbell… If you don’t make the playoffs this year, next year could get weird, potentially, all depends on how badly this year goes," Mike Florio said. "No one’s immune to getting fired if you have a 2-15… debacle," he added.

Head coach Dan Campbell has entered his sixth season with the Detroit Lions. He joined the Lions on January 20, 2021. He has built the Lions environment on grit, conviction, and collaboration on and off the field

He has 27 years of NFL experience, 11 as a tight end and 16 years as a coach. He set the franchise record for most wins in a season in 2024. 

However, they had only 9 wins and 8 losses with a total of 57 touchdowns. The number of significant injuries and some inconsistency down the stretch are the primary reasons for such a downfall. 

Even after making plenty of goodwill, he is now being questioned about his future with the Lions. According to Florio, his defeat against the Washington Commanders as a 1 seed was the most embarrassing turning point for him. 

Campbell acknowledged their poor performance last season during the 2026 Annual League Meeting.

How Brad Holmes is ready to give Dan Campbell all the tools

Holmes’ free-agency strategy saw Detroit add pieces that can rotate, stay fresh, and absorb injuries. 

He added Isiah Pacheco (RB), Tyler Conklin (TE), Roger McCreary (CB), Ben Bartch (OL), Chuck Clark (S), and Greg Dortch (WR). The foundation is already strong with Jared Goff leading from the front.

They can build around Lions Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and others to build around Goff. Holmes is also hoping to pick up some good talent at the 2026 NFL Draft.

"I think you can get in trouble chasing needs sometimes, and then you're depending on a rookie. You do the best you can, but nobody has a crystal ball," he had said in April last year, and that approach remains unchanged.
