The head coach, Dan Campbell, has been providing updates on the Lions' progress before training camp begins at the end of next month. In his latest interview, he mentioned cornerback Terrion Arnold, who is returning from last season's injury.
Matt Dery, a sportscaster, discussed on the Locked on Cowboys podcast about the Lions' 2024 first-round pick, Terion Arnold, who enters a crucial year in Detroit.
"Terion Arnold having to compete for that job when you're a former first-round pick should not happen," said Dery on the podcast. "But I get what Dan Campbell is doing. He's saying everybody's competing, and he included Terion Arnold in that; he's light a little bit of a fire under his third-year cornerback."
Campbell made it clear that every position is open for competition and no player is guaranteed a starting role, raising questions about Arnold's standing on the team.

Matt Dery emphasized on Locked On Cowboys about Campbell's statement and what it could mean for the young 2024 first-round pick who only featured in eight games last year.
Due to a shoulder injury, Arnold's second NFL year was cut short, as his 60 total tackles came down to 31 last year, with deflected passes falling from 10 to eight.
Even in his limited gametime, the glimpses of improvement were there. Which isn't surprising, as the overall No. 24th pick was selected to become a cornerstone of Detroit's secondary.
Campbell's has made a culture that has transformed Detroit into one of the NFL's top contenders. By mentioning this publicly, Dery believes he's sending a message to Arnold to motivate him to give his best.
A strong response on the field from Arnold could reinforce his status as a long-term player in Detroit and a defensive centerpiece, which could be bad news for Rock Ya Sin, who filled in Arnold's boots with 47 total tackles and nine pass breakups in his six starts.
Interestingly, Arnold recently fired back at the 'make-or-break' label on him by the media.
'Every Day Will Be a Make-or-Break Day,' Terrion Arnold Rejects Media Narrative
The Lions' cornerback Terrion Arnold isn't buying the growing narrative of the media that the 2026 season will decide his NFL future.
“That’s kind of like the narrative the media puts on it. But for me, I feel like every year is a make-or-break year,” Arnold told reporters on June 17, after minicamp via DetroitLions.com. “Just like, when you go out there, and you have to perform under pressure and certain circumstances, players grow every year.
Arnold pushed back against the idea that he is entering a make-or-break phase. As expectations increase for him, he made clear that he views every season equally important.
While viewers have asked whether he can take the next step in his third year, Arnold is focused on growth and letting his performance do the talking.
